When the road will be closed

Work on the A3124 is programmed to be carried out 16 – 17 September with a full road closure. The work will take place between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Why we are doing this work

Trees with ash dieback become unstable and will shed branches and can collapse as the level of infection spreads within the tree.

Collapsing trees, even relatively small ones, present a significant hazard to passing vehicles. Therefore, we are removing infected trees within falling distance of the highway.

The risk of trees falling onto the highway increases over time following a detailed inspection by an independent arboriculturalist and ecologist. This work was identified as urgent and in need of completion to ensure public safety.

Why we have to close the road

We must ensure the safety of our workforce and the public, and in order to comply with our safety guidelines, we are unable to carry out all of this work under two-way traffic signals.

Night working has been ruled out at this site because the work is complex and cannot be undertaken safely outside of daylight hours as the risks associated with tree feeling increase significantly during the hours of darkness.

Diversion route

We have a duty to direct traffic along a similar standard of road to that being closed so that all vehicles, including large articulated vehicles, can safely use the diversion route.

Both the official diversion route and the alternative route for light vehicles will be treated with salt during periods of cold weather.

How local traffic is being handled

Access to frontages, for example, businesses and properties within the closure will be maintained.

There may be a small delay to allow the movement of machinery and debris to facilitate safe passage. Emergency access will be maintained.
