‘A’ roads resurfacing – South Hams

What are we doing?

Resurfacing work will take place on 6 main ‘A’ roads in the South Hams area during September and October. We are coordinating the work to reduce costs and minimise disruption.

The work will start on Tuesday 24 September and be completed by Wednesday 23 October 2019. However, this work is weather dependent and dates may vary.

Where is the work taking place?

Our programme for this work is:

  1. A379 Bridge Road, Hillhead, Kingswear: 24 to 26th September
  2. A385 Longcombe Cross, Berry Pomeroy: 27 Sep to 1 Oct
  3. A3122 Venn Lane to Norton, Stoke Flemming: 7 to 10 October
  4. A381 Totnes Cross: 14 and 15 October
  5. A379 Fancy Cross, Modbury: 16 to 21 October
  6. A3121 Spring Water Barn, Ugborough: 22 and 23 October

What traffic management will we use?

All work will be carried out under road closures. All of the closures will be in place overnight from 7:00pm to 7:00 am Monday to Friday, except the A379 Bridge Road. The A379 Bridge Road closure will run from midnight to 6.00am. This is to coincide with the hours when the Dartmouth Higher Ferry is not in operation.

Whilst the roads are closed, a signed diversion route will be in place.

Why are we doing this work?

We have assessed the condition of the existing road surface in line with our asset management principles and have prioritised this section of road for resurfacing. This work is needed to ensure the roads are maintained in a safe condition and to maintain the structural integrity of the roads.

Why do we have to close the roads?

We must ensure the safety of our workforce and the public and in order to comply with our safety guidelines we are unable to carry out this work without a road closure.

Where there are narrow sections of road within the working site we do have to close the road to give our workforce a safe working zone, however, we have worked hard to ensure that the closures are short time periods where possible in order to keep disruption to road users to a minimum.

We apologise for any inconvenience this essential work causes and assure you that we are doing our best to minimise disruption wherever possible.
