Apply for a dropped kerb – contractor application form

Contractors who have been appointed to construct or amend a dropped kerb can use this service to apply and pay for a licence. The cost of the licence is £308.

The application form should take about 10 minutes to complete.

Before you start

Please make sure that planning permission has been sought by the property owner if it is needed.

We suggest that you carry out a site visit before you make an application to ensure that all the conditions required for a dropped kerb are being met – we are unlikely to provide full refunds if proper checks have not taken place. See the payment details below for more information.

Ensure you have read the terms and conditions for contractors constructing a vehicle crossing or access ramp on the highway.

You will need to be able to provide the following information in order to make a successful application:

Location

In relation to the site location, we will need to know:

  • the address
  • if there are any utility covers within the footway crossing
  • if there are any obstructions or restrictions that will require moving (for example, road sign or street light)

You will also need to provide a simple location plan or photo (jpg, gif or png) showing the location of the proposed crossing. If you attach a photo, please make sure it is up-to-date. Please see an example below:

Specification and proposed work

In relation to the work we will need to know the:

  • proposed dates that work will be carried out (we require 20 working days’ notice)
  • proposed traffic management (if required)
  • size of the driveway
  • specification and quantities for the site, including kerbs, materials, gravel trap and type of crossing
  • type of traffic management that will be used

Payment

You will need credit or debit card details in order to use this service as full payment is required at the time of application.

Please be aware that your application and payment do not guarantee approval of a licence. A highways officer will carry out a site visit once your application has been accepted. The cost of this site visit (including an admin fee) is £146 and is included in the overall licence fee. In the majority of circumstances, this part of the licence fee will be non-refundable if approval cannot be granted.

What happens next?

We require 20 working days’ notice of any proposed work and we will respond to your application within that time period.

If there are any problems with your application we will get in touch with you either by phone or email.
