Using ATF Tranche 2 funding, traffic volumes on some of these streets were reduced, with the\u00a0Homefield Road\u00a0modal filter made permanent and the\u00a0Chard Road\u00a0modal filter trial extended. This created safer and more pleasant conditions for people of all ages and abilities to walk and cycle. Using ATF Tranche 2 funding, the modal filter on\u00a0Ludwell Lane\u00a0and the bus gate on\u00a0Wonford Road\u00a0were made permanent, while the\u00a0Dryden Road\u00a0modal filter trial was extended. It passes the\u00a0Whipton, Heavitree\u00a0and\u00a0Wonford\u00a0residential areas via\u00a0Hamlin Lane playing fields\u00a0and the\u00a0Riverside Valley Park. Using ATF Tranche 2 funding, a bi-directional light segregated cycle track was constructed on\u00a0Sweetbrier Lane, between the\u00a0Honiton Road\u00a0and\u00a0Vaughan Road\u00a0junction. Together these cycle facilities will improve access to employment, education and green spaces, to help improve physical activity in\u00a0Whipton\u00a0and\u00a0Wonford, which are both priority areas in the\u00a0Sport England Local Delivery Pilot\u00a0and\u00a0Exeter City Council\u2019s Physical Activity Strategy.<\/p>\n<h3>Countess Wear<\/h3>\n<p>A signalised pedestrian\/cycle crossing was constructed across the northern (Rydon Lane) arm of\u00a0Countess Wear Roundabout, improving safety on a key desire line to employment at\u00a0Pynes Hill Business Park\u00a0and for students travelling to\u00a0Isca Academy\u00a0(897 students) on foot or by cycle.<\/p>\n<h3>City Centre<\/h3>\n<p>On\u00a0Queen Street, Exeter,\u00a0the western footway was widened using planters, and vehicular traffic restricted to one-way (southbound), with two-way bus, taxi and cycle traffic permitted. This helped facilitate social distancing and improve pedestrian facilities on this busy city centre route, home to\u00a0Exeter College, Exeter Central station, the\u00a0Royal Albert Memorial Museum\u00a0and various businesses. To mitigate the impacts of displaced traffic on\u00a0St David\u2019s Hill, the\u00a0Iron Bridge\u00a0was made one-way (northbound), except for cycles improving the walking and cycling environment in this historic area of the city.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12817\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12817\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12817\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/roadsandtransport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2022\/08\/City-Centre-246x300.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/roadsandtransport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2022\/08\/City-Centre-246x300.png 246w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/roadsandtransport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2022\/08\/City-Centre.png 368w\" alt=\"Image shows Queen Street, Exeter, modal filter.\" width=\"378\" height=\"461\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Queen Street, Exeter<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/li><li id=\"item-64f896669d9a6-1\" class=\"accordion-item\" data-accordion-item=\"\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title\">Newton Abbot<\/a><div class=\"accordion-content\" data-tab-content><p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">East to west shared use scheme<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Newton Abbot East to West shared used path\u00a0provides a walking and cycling link from new and existing housing developments to schools, employment sites and\u00a0Newton Abbot railway station. Using ATF Tranche 2 funding, permanent signalised crossings were delivered at two locations on the route, at\u00a0Exeter Road\u00a0and\u00a0Jetty Marsh Road, enabling pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross these busy roads.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>This also improved links to the recently completed\u00a0Stover Trail\u00a0that links\u00a0Newton Abbot\u00a0to the market town of\u00a0Bovey Tracey\u00a0and onwards to\u00a0Dartmoor\u00a0via the\u00a0Wray Valley Trail.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li id=\"item-64f896669d9a6-2\" class=\"accordion-item\" data-accordion-item=\"\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title\">Barnstaple<\/a><div class=\"accordion-content\" data-tab-content><h3>NCN Tarka Trail to Anchorwood<\/h3>\n<p>A new shared use path segregated from vehicles connecting the\u00a0Tarka Trail\u00a0to new development at\u00a0Anchorwood Bank. They aim to make walking and cycling to school more attractive, and give parents greater confidence in allowing their children to walk or cycle to school. By doing so, they aim to improve physical activity levels among school children, and reduce vehicular traffic and associated pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Using ATF Tranche 2, three School Streets trialled through ATF Tranche 1 were made permanent, at\u00a0Bradley Barton Primary School\u00a0in\u00a0Newton Abbot, and\u00a0Ladysmith Primary School\u00a0and\u00a0Whipton Barton Federation\u00a0in\u00a0Exeter. This was following consultation with parents, school staff and local residents, which showed 86% of respondents wanted the School Streets to be made permanent.
