Residential care services consultation

Devon County Council has been very carefully considering the future of its services in its residential care homes, including an extensive period of consultation with staff, clients, their families and carers and a range of stakeholders, and consideration of the alternative care available.

Following these considerations, it has been determined that in order for Devon County Council to use its resources in the most cost effective way, and to continue to support vulnerable individuals who are eligible for residential care services, the County Council will no longer provide residential care services in the 20 homes consulted on. These services will be commissioned from the independent sector instead.

The Council appreciates that this will cause concern, however there is no change to eligibility criteria for access to care services by Devon County Council. The authority is committed to doing everything it can to support residents and their families to identify and secure the best possible care by arranging and purchasing a residential placement, or nursing placement if appropriate, in the independent sector.

Following further consideration of the matter at the Council’s People Scrutiny Committee on Thursday 26 June, the decision is final and can be acted upon immediately.

The overall recommendation report, individual reports and impact assessments are now available.
