{"id":1345,"date":"2023-05-04T17:47:01","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T16:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta.devon.gov.uk\/registrationservice\/marriages-and-civil-partnerships\/give-notice\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T11:11:46","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T10:11:46","slug":"give-notice","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/registration-service\/marriages-and-civil-partnerships\/give-notice\/","title":{"rendered":"Give notice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-dcc-blue-border is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Giving notice of your intention to get married or form a civil partnership is a legal requirement and you must both have done this before your ceremony can take place<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to give notice at least 29 days before you intend to get married or form a civil partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must have booked your ceremony venue and registrar before you give notice. If you change the location of your ceremony you will need to give notice again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We recommend that you give notice in good time, ideally, three months before your ceremony is due to take place. You must not give notice more than 12 months in advance of your ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must give notice at your local registration office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you live in Devon (excluding Plymouth and Torbay) you can give notice at any of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/registration-service\/venues\/register-offices\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"17\">registration offices<\/a>. You must have lived in Devon for at least eight nights immediately before you give notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please call <a href=\"tel:03451551002\">0345 155 1002<\/a> to book an appointment at any of our registration offices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you do not live in Devon you will need to give notice at your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-offices\" rel=\"noopener\">local registration office<\/a>. If you live in different registration districts you will need to give notice separately. It doesn\u2019t need to be done at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If one of you is from outside the UK<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you or your partner is from outside the UK you will need to attend an appointment together, even if you don\u2019t both live in Devon. Take a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/marriages-civil-partnerships\/give-notice#:~:text=Where%20to%20give%20notice\" rel=\"noopener\">government guidance on where to give notice<\/a> if this applies to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please also read the guidance on what else you might need to do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/marriages-civil-partnerships\/from-outside-the-uk-or-ireland\" rel=\"noopener\">if either of you are from outside the UK or Ireland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At your appointment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will need to produce certain documents to confirm your name, age, marital status and nationality. Please see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/marriages-civil-partnerships\/documents-youll-need-to-give-notice\" rel=\"noopener\">GOV.UK \u2013 documents you\u2019ll need to give notice<\/a> for an exact list of what you\u2019ll need to take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It costs \u00a346.50 per person to give notice.
