{"id":870,"date":"2026-04-20T13:06:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T12:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta.devon.gov.uk\/public-health\/health-and-wellbeing-board\/joint-strategic-needs-assessment\/what-is-the-jsna\/"},"modified":"2026-06-15T13:33:53","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T12:33:53","slug":"what-is-the-jsna","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/public-health\/jhws\/joint-strategic-needs-assessment\/what-is-the-jsna\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) looks at the current and future health and care needs of local populations to inform and guide the planning and commissioning (buying) of health, wellbeing and social care services within a local authority area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aims of the JSNA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main aims of the JSNA are to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>identify needs &#8211; assess the current and future health and social care needs of the local population<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>inform planning &#8211; provide evidence-based information to guide the planning and provision of health, social care, and public health services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>promote integration &#8211; encourage collaboration between different organisations, such as the NHS, local authorities, and community groups to address identified needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce inequalities &#8211; highlight health disparities and target resources to reduce inequalities in health outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support decision-making &#8211; help health and wellbeing boards make informed decisions about priorities and strategies to improve local health and wellbeing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who the JSNA is for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main audience for the JSNA are health and social care commissioners who use it to plan services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can also be used as an evidence base for preparing bids and business cases, by the voluntary and community sector to ensure that community needs and views are represented, by service providers to assist in the future development of their services, and by the public to scrutinise local health and wellbeing information, plans and commissioning recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the JSNA looks like in Devon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JSNAs are flexible and enable local areas to focus on the priorities and present information in the way most relevant to them.
