During periods of very warm weather, more people become seriously unwell and some deaths are preventable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that a few simple steps can help you stay safe and protect the people around you. Taking action early can reduce your risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be prepared<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Planning ahead can make it easier to stay safe when temperatures rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Check the weather forecast regularly<\/strong> so you can plan activities, travel and outdoor exercise around the hottest parts of the day. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">View the latest forecast on the Met Office website<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/warnings-and-advice\/seasonal-advice\/heat-health-alert-service\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up to receive heat-health alerts<\/a> and updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Check essential household equipment<\/strong> such as fridges, freezers and fans before hot weather arrives to make sure they are working properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Store medicines safely<\/strong>. Some medicines need to be kept cool and may be affected by unusually high temperatures. Note the storage instructions provided with your medication and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/dont-let-this-heatwave-affect-your-medicines-three-important-tips-from-the-mhra\" rel=\"noopener\">read these three important tips from the MHRA<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Look after yourself &#8211; and look out for others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping cool and staying hydrated are some of the most effective ways to protect your health during hot weather.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep your home cool by opening windows early in the morning or overnight when the air is cooler, then closing windows,\u00a0blinds\u00a0and curtains during the hottest part of the day, especially in rooms exposed to direct sunlight.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spend time in the coolest available place, whether that is indoors or in a shaded outdoor area.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drink fluids regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Young children and babies are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness and sunburn. Read the NHS advice on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/baby\/first-aid-and-safety\/safety\/safety-in-the-sun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keeping your baby safe in the sun<\/a>\u00a0for practical guidance.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Older people, people living alone and those with long-term health conditions may need extra support during hot weather. Take a few minutes to check on relatives, neighbours,&nbsp;friends&nbsp;and others who may be struggling to stay cool or hydrated.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are concerned about someone who may need support, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\" rel=\"noopener\">contact your local authority<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If someone becomes unwell because of the heat, seek medical advice from NHS 111 or their GP. Call 999\u00a0immediately\u00a0if the situation is life-threatening.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/seasonal-health\/heatwave-how-to-cope-in-hot-weather\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Further information on how to cope in hot weather is available from the NHS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take care outdoors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enjoying the outdoors safely can help you make the most of warm weather while reducing health risks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protect your skin by following\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/seasonal-health\/sunscreen-and-sun-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS guidance on sunscreen and sun safety<\/a>. Sunburn\u00a0increases the risk of skin cancer and can happen quickly during periods of strong sunshine.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware that surfaces such as tarmac, artificial grass, pavements and sand can become extremely hot.
