{"id":563,"date":"2019-07-11T14:50:30","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T13:50:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/prow-new\/?page_id=563"},"modified":"2025-07-31T13:46:03","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T12:46:03","slug":"inspections-and-maintenance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/prow\/inspections-and-maintenance\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspections and maintenance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Public Rights of Way Warden Team is responsible for the inspection, maintenance and enforcement work on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/prow\/what-are-public-rights-of-way\/\">public rights of way<\/a>, off-road cycleways\/recreational trails and maintenance category 12 roads (these are normally roads that do not have a tarmacked surface).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact details for the Public Rights of Way Team and information about how to report problems on the access network can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/prow\/\">Public Rights of Way Team&#8217;s Homepage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The network is inspected with the following frequency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th scope=\"col\">Category<\/th><th scope=\"col\">Frequency<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Public rights of way<\/td><td>Every three years<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Maintenance category 12 roads<\/td><td>Every three years<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>South West Coast Path<\/td><td>Annually<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Off-road cycleways\/Recreational trails<\/td><td>Annually<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They are inspected against the <a href=\"https:\/\/devoncc.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/s\/PublicDocs\/Highways\/ES79nKRqVZ1CpQ8DqP5jTXEBk4bDBWFcMKk9qRBtlH04RQ?e=dhoXtl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Rights of Way Condition Criteria<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wardens\u2019 work is supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/prow\/parish-paths-partnership-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parish Paths Partnership Scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of practical work is done using contractors that have signed up to the Maintenance and Improvement of Public Rights of Way Contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Surface improvement application form<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are considering improving the surface of a public right of way (for example, to make a route easier to drive along if you have private vehicular access rights over a public bridleway) then you need Devon County Council\u2019s permission to do this. <a href=\"https:\/\/devoncc.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/s\/PublicDocs\/Highways\/EVpybTLBrZ9Pv7yOEdtMjzUB_elDz5vSPchxA1VmjS3UZQ?e=dN37Vv\" rel=\"noopener\">Please read, complete and return this application form<\/a>. There is currently no charge for considering such applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Installing a new gate application form<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you plan to install a gate across a public right of way where no gate currently exists, you are required to seek approval from Devon County Council under Section 147 of the Highways Act 1980. <a href=\"https:\/\/devoncc.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/s\/PublicDocs\/Highways\/EdL7d15XRyVLs_0qbHZHEYQBvi5CJMbLpJxiIbZTjg0vag?e=C70EQ1\" rel=\"noopener\">Please use this application form<\/a>.
