Northern Training & Education Opportunities


Funded training

The Northern Care Homes Team provides support and structured education/training to care homes (nursing and residential), domiciliary care providers and supported/assisted living providers within North Devon.

Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI)

Available as Face to Face or Virtually Via Teams. Presented by Nurse Educators from the Northern Devon Care Homes Team. This session is designed to decrease CAUTI prevalence of service users by increasing your team’s knowledge of:

  • Prevention of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (C.A.U.T.I.)
  • What are the risks associated with C.A.U.T.I
  • Catheter Care / Care Planning.

Introduction to Diabetes

Learning the Basics for Care Settings in North Devon. Presentation by Nurse Educators from Northern Devon Care Homes Team. Available as Face to Face or Virtual Via Teams.

Diabetes Part 2

Presented by a Nurse Educators from Northern Devon care Homes Team, this session with developing your teams confidence, awareness and understanding of Diabetic complications including:

  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Hyperglycaemia
  • Infections
  • Circulatory complications relating to limbs
  • Renal impairment
  • Deterioration of eyesight.

End of Life Care Training

Training is available as Face to Face. This training will delivered by Nurse Educators in the Northern Devon Care Homes team and will cover the following: 

  • The 5 priorities of care for the dying person, which includes the recognition of a dying person.
  • Practical measures for caring for someone at the end of life.
  • Effective documentation.

BITE SIZE Virtual End of Life Care training sessions.

This training will be presented via MST by Sarah Gabe, Clinical Educator from the North Devon Hospice. In collaboration with the Northern Devon Cares Home Team Educators

  • Wednesday 25th September. 2.00 till 3.30 pm. Management of nausea and vomiting.
  • Tuesday 29th October. 2.00 till 3.30 pm. Management of constipation.
  • Tuesday 26th November. 2.00 till 3.30 pm. Eating and drinking at end of life.

Devon Palliative and End of Life Care and Bereavement

One Devon resource, NHS Devon aims to deliver Palliative and End of Life Care services across Devon that are sustainable and consistent in terms of access, experience and outcome for individuals, their families and those delivering EOL Care.

Falls

Training is available as Face to Face. Presentation by OT Educator from Northern Devon Care Homes Team.

Falls Prevention & Awareness for Care Homes. This training will be delivered in the North Devon area, and will include:-

  • How to identify a resident at risk of falling
  • What actions should be taken to reduce their risk of falling
  • If someone fell, how should you respond and if needed, which support services are appropriate?
  • Safe floor retrieval
  • We will also include a Falls Resource Pack for your home
  • Signposting to services & useful resources

Falls Study Days for Care Home Managers. These will be held at a local venue, for groups of Managers/Senior Staff, to bring current Falls Management process in line with the World Guidelines for Falls Prevention published recently.  This will include:-

  • Legislation and strong recommendations
  • Multifactorial Falls Risk Assessments
  • Developing a set Procedural Response for when a fall occurs
  • Physical Assessments and promoting Strength/Balance exercise
  • Development of Individualised Falls Prevention Plans
  • Monitoring and Reporting of Falls

Nutrition and Hydration

Available Face to Face. Presentation by Nurse Educators from Northern Devon Care Homes Team. Intake of good nutrition and hydration is a fundamental part of everyday life, but can often be challenging. The impact of poor nutrition and hydration has far reaching effects on quality of life and overall health.

This training is aimed at care staff, to give practical guidance on how to support clients to maintain optimum dietary and fluid intake. It covers recognizing signs and symptoms, prevention of and improvement of malnutrition and dehydration and includes recognizing problems with swallowing, referral to speech and language therapy and the IDDSI framework.

RESTORE2

Available as Face to Face. RESTORE2 is a tool used by Residential and Nursing Homes and Domiciliary Care Agencies to recognise and escalate deterioration in individuals in their care. Watch this video to find out more about RESTORE2. It is designed to support staff to:

  • Recognise when a person may be deteriorating or is at risk of physical deterioration
  • Act appropriately according to the persons care plan to protect and manage the person
  • Obtain a complete set of physical observations and the use of “soft signs” to inform escalation and communication with health professionals
  • Speak with the appropriate health professionals in a timely way to get the right help, in the right place
  • Provide a clear escalation history to health professionals to support their decision making.

Sepsis Awareness Training

Training is available as Face to Face. This training will delivered by Nurse Educators in the Northern Devon Care Homes team and will cover the following: 

  • To define what sepsis is. 
  • To describe what happens in the body when sepsis is progressing.
  • To  list the signs and symptoms of sepsis and state what to do if you suspect it.

Dementia Care

  • Alzheimer’s Society, a range of information services, resources and specialist training for health and social care professionals working with people who have dementia.

End of life Care

Presented by North Devon Hospice. The North Devon Hospice is a charity providing specialist care to patients and their families living with life-limiting conditions across North Devon and Torridge. We offer many learning opportunities to support all levels of staff to feel confident in delivering excellent end of life care. Our specialist teams have extensive experience and knowledge of caring for people during the end stages of their life.

The courses we currently offer are; Pharmacological symptom management, Non pharmacological symptom management and holistic care, Advance care planning and patient centred care, advanced syringe driver and palliative emergencies, enhanced communication skills, BD syringe driver training, BD syringe driver troubleshooting, verification of expected death, care champion (promoting best practice) and Teaching skills for registered staff these are all available to book via the North Devon Hospice website subject to availability.

We also deliver clinical skills training for our staff i.e. catheterisation – if you are interested in further information on clinical skills training, please contact education@northdevonhospice.org.uk

eLearning

Devon County Council have partnered with Flourish previously called Grey Matter Learning to provide part funded social care courses for all providers in the Devon catchment area, this is 2/3 funded. The platform allows users access to over 130 social care eLearning courses, all in one place! To sign up for an account, please contact the team. Select contact us and will in the required details and add that you would like an account under the Devon County Council funding. A member of the team will then be in touch with you to set up an account.

QAIT

The Quality Assurance and Improvement Team at Devon County Council offers a free support service which includes:

  • Helping you to identify the reason(s) for any non-compliance following a CQC Inspection and supporting you to develop an action plan to enable you to return to compliance
  • Helping to identify where systems and processes are not effective and where improvements can be made
  • Providing you with supportive resources, advice, guidance and information on improving quality in all aspects of your service provision
  • Supporting you to develop and implement an effective quality assurance programme that will provide long term benefits in maintaining the quality of your service
  • Prioritised referrals to leadership and management development training.
