Swimming pool safety awareness day for small businesses

Posted on: 5 December 2019

Businesses across North Devon and Torridge operating small swimming pools are being encouraged to sign up for a pool safety awareness day.

North Devon Council and Torridge District Council are holding the event especially for small businesses across both districts which will cover essential points to make sure small pools are operated safely. Topics covered include:

  • operator training
  • risk assessments
  • written procedures – Normal Operating Plan (NOP) and Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
  • pool hire arrangements
  • controlling poolside access
  • safe pool – physical surroundings, profile, outlets, inlets and features
  • safe use – pool rules, supervision and lifeguarding
  • safe plant – maintenance and record keeping
  • safe pool water – treatment, monitoring, corrective actions, recording and test kit
  • safe storage of chemicals and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • safe spa pool operation

The event is taking place on Tuesday 4 February 2020 at Caddsdown Business Support Centre, Clovelly Road, Bideford, EX39 3DX. Anybody wishing to attend the event needs to book their place by Tuesday 21 January by calling Torridge District Council on 01237 428809. Each place costs £20 and includes refreshments, lunch and a specifically produced Pool Operator Work Book. The day will be delivered by pool industry expert Paul Sharples.

Head of Environmental Health and Housing Services at North Devon Council, Jeremy Mann, says: “This course is especially designed for anybody who operates a small pool as part of their business such as holiday lets, B&Bs and small hotels. We’ve already contacted many businesses direct but we’re keen to get as many people who would benefit from the day to come along and take part in the training.”

Environmental Health and Community Safety Manager at Torridge District Council, Janet Williams, says: “Pools are an integral part of many people’s holiday experiences in Devon and it’s important that they are operated safely and competently. Whether you have many years experience or are new to looking after a small pool this course will help you to understand best practice in providing this facility for your guests. It is also an opportunity for business owners to make sure any staff with responsibility for a pool are up to speed with operational and legal obligations and will ensure pools are operated to the best standards.”

The event is part of a Devon wide project by local authorities to improve public and operator safety across the county. Anybody who is interested but unable to attend the Bideford event should contact Pam Charles (01271 388870) at North Devon Council who can provide advice about dates and events elsewhere in Devon.
