New temporary accommodation available to North Devon residents

North Devon’s homeless householders are less likely to end up in hotels, thanks to an improved temporary housing provision purchased by North Devon Council.
At a meeting of the council’s Strategy and Resources Committee on Monday (4 November), lead members heard that the council has purchased eight properties within the district. This follows a decision in February 2018 to put aside £1.2 million to buy property for temporary accommodation. The money was invested in recognition that the initiative would improve the standard of accommodation offered to individuals and families in housing crisis, whilst also offering greater value for money for the council.
During its first year, the initiative has helped 634 households in its first year, with those in housing crisis being provided with better quality accommodation that is more suitable for their needs than bed and breakfast facilities. The properties the council have purchased are a combination of two and three bedroom houses which have been refurbished to a high standard. One of these, a property in Forches, will soon be converted to include a one bedroom flat and a three bedroom flat, and the council plan to purchase four more properties. Before undertaking the project, the council did not manage any social housing, having previously transferred all housing stock to the local housing association in 2000.
North Devon Council’s Lead Member for Housing, Councillor Nicola Topham says: “This is an incredibly positive initiative and I’m delighted that we have been able to help so many people. Buying properties as temporary accommodation benefits those in housing crisis because it means they don’t have to be placed in hotels and B&B’s, which can be extremely unsettling at an already difficult time. We also have specialist support officers available to help address the wider needs of individuals in temporary accommodation.”
