New pool project receives £1.5m from Coastal Communities Fund

It’s been confirmed that £1.5m is on its way to North Devon, towards a new swimming pool for the district.
North Devon Council has been successful in its bid for funding from the Coastal Communities Fund towards its project to deliver a new pool and leisure facilities adjoining Tarka Tennis in Barnstaple.
Later this month the council also hopes to be in a position to announce whether its bid for a further £1.75m to Sport England has been successful. With this in place the council will be able to start work on the project later this year.
Mark Kentell, Contracts Delivery Manager for North Devon Council, says: “We are overjoyed to hear the news and I’m sure many of the clubs and individuals who use the existing leisure centre will also be delighted that we’re a significant step closer to the delivery of a new centre. I’d particularly like to thank the RNLI for supporting us in our funding application. They spoke very passionately to the CCF when they visited Barnstaple last month, highlighting the strategic importance of having a suitable swimming pool for their training purposes. We hope to be celebrating similar funding success from Sport England very soon.”
The exact design and mix of facilities will be developed once the contract has been awarded to an operator, but will include a 25 metre, eight-lane main pool, learner pool, viewing area, sports hall, fitness suite, and exercise studios. The scheme will also include a new artificial grass pitch, whilst retaining one of the grass pitches at Tarka Tennis Centre.
