Make sure you can have your say on local issues and much more
Posted on: 12 March 2019
North Devon and Torridge residents are being reminded to make sure they can have their say on local issues and much more by registering to vote.
Local district and parish elections are just around the corner, taking place on Thursday 2 May across both districts. Anyone who is aged 18 or over will be able to vote on the day, providing they are on the register of electors. Residents have until Friday 12 April to be included in the register – it’s quick and easy to do, taking just five minutes to apply online.
As well as being able to vote, the electoral register may also be checked by companies when applications are made for credit.
Electoral Services Manager at North Devon Council, Judith Dark, says: “Registration only needs to be done once, unless something changes such as your address or you get married and change your name, then details need to be updated. You can register to vote when you are 17 years old, so you’re ready to vote in any election or referendum you’re eligible to vote in once you’re 18. Voting at district and parish elections is your chance to have your say about who represents your views on local issues.”
Senior Elections Officer at Torridge District Council, Tom Vanstone, say: “Many decisions affecting residents are often taken at a local district or parish level. So if you want to influence how your council is run and who represents you its important that you register to vote to have your say on polling day, 2nd May. The process is quick and easy and the elections team at Torridge are also able to help if you have any queries. Once registered you’ll also be eligible to vote in any future elections as well.”
More information about registering to vote and the different ways to vote, including postal and absent votes, can be found on the council websites:
