Another step forward for North Devon’s new leisure centre

Posted on: 28 February 2019

The future of North Devon’s leisure centre has been under discussion at North Devon Council.

At a special Executive meeting on Tuesday 26 February, councillors approved a recommendation to proceed with the construction of a new leisure centre at Seven Brethren in Barnstaple. The proposal will see a new swimming pool, sports hall and exercise studios built next to Tarka Tennis Centre. The decision will now be taken to a Full Council meeting on Wednesday 13 March.

The project is still dependent on external funding from Sport England Strategic Facilities Fund and the Coastal Communities Fund, but yesterday’s decision is a significant step towards delivering this exciting project. Funding decisions are expected from Sport England on 6 March and the Coastal Communities Fund by 29 March. With all the funding in place, the council would hope to start work on the project later this year.

The leaders of the Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Independent groups of North Devon Council are all supporting the project: “Providing a new leisure centre for North Devon will achieve the aims of our Leisure and Health strategy and meet the needs of our residents and the many clubs and schools who make use of our current facilities. We are very hopeful that our applications for funding will be successful.”
