Winner announced in Christmas wreath competition

Posted on: 28 November 2018

Judging has taken place and a winner chosen in this year’s Christmas wreath competition at Barnstaple Pannier Market.

Throughout November, local schools, businesses and community groups from across North Devon have been getting creative in the competition to decorate Victorian themed Christmas wreaths.

The winning design was announced on 23 November and was created by the North Devon Forum for Autism and ADHD. The cogs on their wreath, against the charity’s signature yellow, represent the rational and logical minds of people on the autistic spectrum, married with the aesthetic of Victorian steampunk.

Leader of North Devon Council and competition judge, Councillor Des Brailey, says: “It was extremely hard to choose a winner from all the wonderful entries, but the forum’s entry really stood out with a very original design. Well done to all the groups who entered, you have all created something to be proud of. Now the wreaths are all on display, the Pannier Market looks absolutely beautiful and very festive.”

Louisa York, trustee of North Devon Forum for Autism, says: “Speaking on behalf of all the trustees, we are really pleased that we won the wreath competition. We hope this will help to raise awareness of our charity.

“It took nearly 20 hours of work to create the cardboard cogs and combine them with the yellow fabric and ribbons. We couldn’t believe how big the wreath was, but we were up to the challenge!

“The charity was founded 26 years ago and we have a membership of over 800 families and professionals. We often hear of families struggling at the start of their journeys into the world of autism and ADHD, and they find our events and activities are inclusive and non-judgmental.

“Thank you to the council, Barnstaple Town Centre Management and the Pannier Market traders for this accolade. Well done to everyone else who took part – the Pannier Market looks really festive this year!”

Following the close of the competition, all entries are now on display in Barnstaple Pannier Market for visitors to enjoy throughout the festive season.
