North Devon Council supports Responsible Gambling Week

Posted on: 9 November 2018

Responsible Gambling Week, a cross-industry initiative to promote responsible gambling behaviours, returned on 1 November, supported by North Devon Council.

The week is designed to get people talking about what it means to gamble responsibly, focusing on the tools that are available to keep gambling fun and safe. The campaign also aims to ensure that anyone who needs additional information or support knows where they can find it.

To mark Responsible Gambling Week, North Devon Council’s Lead Licensing Officer, Howard Bee invited the Gambling Commission Compliance Manager for the South West to visit North Devon on 1 November and accompany him on some joint premises visits.

One of the aims of the day was to visit as many gambling premises as possible to educate and give advice to license holders about ‘responsible gambling’ and how to help safeguard vulnerable people.

Chair of the North Devon Council Licensing Committee, Councillor Jasmine Chesters, says: “We are delighted to partner the Gambling Commission in raising awareness on gambling responsibly, and on how to access help or support for those who need it.”

Richard Nokes, Gambling Commission Compliance Manager for the South West, says: “We want to minimise harm from gambling, so we are pleased to see the industry collaborating in ways such as this to help consumers stay safe and raise awareness of the risks of gambling.”

Executive Member for Public Health Protection and Safeguarding, Councillor Brian Moores, says: “Our licensing team work hard, not just during Responsible Gambling Week, but all year round. To help raise awareness about how to gamble responsibly and the tools that are available to keep gambling safe and fun.”

John Hagan, chairman of the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling, says: “Gambling venues across Devon will be taking part in Responsible Gambling Week, providing information about what it means to gamble responsibly and referring customers who need help or advice to GambleAware. This is a major campaign and the entire gambling industry aims to ensure that people become more aware of their own gambling behaviour and have the information they need about the responsible gambling tools which are available”.

Lead Licensing Officer, Howard Bee, says: “On 1 November, Richard Nokes and I visited four betting premises in Barnstaple. I am pleased to say that all premises had very high levels on compliance, all operators had POS in prominent positions to advertise the week, all staff were briefed, and all had leaflets to hand out.”
