North Devon Team to compete in 2018 South West Youth Games thanks to a council grant

A team from North Devon will be competing in this year’s South West Youth Games, thanks to a grant from North Devon Council.

At a meeting of North Devon Council’s Executive Committee on Monday 2 July, councillors agreed to award £4,000 to the Devon Youth Games Trust to support the event and enable children from North Devon to participate in this year’s event.

The grant will be used to recruit a North Devon team to compete in a minimum of eight different sports. The trust will recruit, kit out and train the team, as well as transporting them to the Games. The Devon Youth Games Trust aim to deliver innovative, accessible and inspirational sport and physical activity experiences for young people across Devon and Cornwall.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Recreation, Councillor Dick Jones, says: “The vision of The Devon Youth Games Trust is to create a happier, healthier South West by engaging more young people from Devon and Cornwall into community sport and regular physical activity. I am pleased that we are able to grant the Trust this money to enable a North Devon team to attend the games and show them just how good they are. I wish our team all the best and am sure that they will do us all very proud.”

The South West Youth Games is a series of events that has evolved from the Devon Youth Games which were previously organised by Local Authorities in Devon and the Devon County Sports Partnership (Active Devon). The Devon Youth Games Trust has taken on the management of The South West Youth Games which delivers the region’s largest programme of community youth sports and physical activity.

They target young people not engaged in regular sport or physical activity. Their sports rules reflect this where they only accept a limited number of young people who are already members of community clubs.
