£1000 Councillor grant helps to get school children up and running

Children at a Barnstaple school are the latest to benefit from a North Devon councillor grant scheme.

On Thursday 19 April, North Devon Council Leader and local ward member, Councillor Des Brailey and Councillor Dick Jones presented a Community Councillor Grant for £1,000 to Sticklepath Community School. The money is being put towards the cost of tarmacking a running track around the school playing field which the children will be able to use for a variety of purposes, including their regular ‘Take 10’ exercises.

Councillor Des Brailey, said: “The Community Councillor Grant Scheme provides a great opportunity for councillors to really help community projects within North Devon.  I’m really pleased that through this scheme we have been able to support Sticklepath Community School with the creation of this running track which will enable children to be more active during the school day.”

Executive Member responsible for sport, leisure and recreation and local ward member, Councillor Dick Jones, said: “I’m delighted to be able to use my Community Grant to provide even more opportunity for the children to keep healthy and enjoy exercise at school.”

Deputy Head of Sticklepath Community School, Richard Blunt, said:”The grant that has supported our running track is vitally important to the fitness levels and health of our pupils. During our daily Take 10 sessions, the running track provides an all weather opportunity for the children to build up their stamina and to increase their heart rate which then benefits their learning in the classroom.”

Through the Community Councillor Grant Scheme, each North Devon councillor has £1,000 to support projects and services run by community or voluntary groups and not for profit organisations each year. Youth clubs, toddler groups, sports clubs, museums, village halls and environmental groups have all benefited from grants in the past for running costs, start-up costs, costs towards a new facility or refurbishing an existing one, towards an event or equipment for a new project or service.

Applications for Councillor Community Grants re-opened again on 24 April 2018 and applications are invited from any not-for-profit group or organisation.  To qualify, the project or service must be located within the North Devon district or be of significant benefit to people living in North Devon.

More information about the scheme is available on our website.
