Residents and businesses across Devon are being urged to cut unnecessary water use now to help avoid further restrictions and protect the county\u2019s most vulnerable residents. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite recent rainfall, parts of Devon remain in severe drought, with some reservoirs at critically low levels. The hosepipe ban remains in place, and further sustained rain is needed for supplies to recover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are backing South West Water\u2019s appeal for urgent action. Reducing demand, alongside the company\u2019s work to repair leaks and manage supplies, is critical to helping avoid further restrictions and emergency drought measures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the situation deteriorates, some homes could temporarily lose their piped water supply. This would be particularly difficult for people who need water for medical or personal care, or who cannot easily collect and carry alternative supplies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional support for vulnerable households will be provided through\u00a0the free Priority Services Register, tailored to customers\u2019 needs. Saving water now can help protect them from that disruption. <\/p>\n\n\n

Council leader Councillor Julian Brazil said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n \t\t

\u201cDevonians always pull together at times of crisis. Drought is a slow crisis, but we all need to act now to avoid restrictions which will impact lives and businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThink about how water is vital to an older parent, a neighbour with limited mobility, or a loved one who needs help with everyday care. Cutting your own water use now can help avoid the need for restrictions on their usage. If they aren\u2019t on the Priority Services Register organised by utility companies, then urge them to apply or do so on their behalf.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t wait to make even a small change. Every drop counts and shortening showers, switching off running taps and waiting for a full washing load are simple steps we can take now to help preserve essential supplies.<\/p>\n

\u201cBusinesses, too, need to examine their own water use and get the water conservation message out to their workforces because this will be a 24 hour a day battle to replenish our reservoirs for many weeks and months to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cSouth West Water must continue working to protect supplies and cut leakage, and as a council we will hold them to account but we all now have a part to play in reducing unnecessary demand. And don\u2019t forget if you are on a meter then using less water means a lower bill as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
