The session highlighted the importance of listening to young people and involving them directly in the design of activities, ensuring opportunities are accessible, enjoyable and tailored to individual needs.

Attendees heard from Jenna Grace of Esteem Team CIC and Jane Nicholls from LED Community Leisure, who shared practical examples of inclusive practice and the positive impact of adapting activities to meet young people’s needs. Discussions highlighted that collaboration between providers, families, schools and young people is key to reducing barriers to participation and helping more young people experience the physical, social and mental health benefits of being active.

The session also showcased how the Active Champs movement is already influencing change across Devon, from the development of new SEND focused activities to providers adapting their offer based on feedback from young people. Those who attended valued the opportunity to share learning, celebrate successes and explore how they can continue working together to make movement matter for every young person.

Active Champs is lead by Active Devon on behalf of Devon County Council and places the voices and lived experiences of children and young people with SEND at the heart of the change. The programme will support physical activity and leisure providers across the county to better understand the barriers faced by children and young people with SEND and make tangible improvements that create welcoming, inclusive environments where every young person feels confident, connected and able to take part.

Learn more about the <a
