{"id":71650,"date":"2026-10-12T17:06:01","date_gmt":"2026-10-12T16:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=71650"},"modified":"2026-10-12T17:06:03","modified_gmt":"2026-10-12T16:06:03","slug":"traffic-set-return-dryden-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/traffic-set-return-dryden-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Traffic set to return to Dryden Road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The opening of Dryden Road took another step forward today after plans for new cycle lanes, speed humps and a zebra crossing were approved.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exeter Highways and Traffic Orders Committee (HATOC) backed the plans (Monday 12 October), following a public consultation earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people who responded wanted the road reopened while keeping routes for walking and cycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dryden Road links Barrack Road and Wonford Street, near the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through-traffic was temporarily stopped in 2020, before it was made permanent in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approved scheme includes cycle lanes on both sides of the road between Barrack Road and Well Oak Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A zebra crossing will be installed near the Mushroom play park, along with a speed hump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An uphill cycle lane will continue from Well Oak Park to Kipling Drive, where the junction will be raised to slow traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another speed hump will be added between Kipling Drive and the Bovemoors Lane mini-roundabout. Existing parking spaces will remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Near Wonford Street, the raised sections of road will be refurbished. Parking spaces and the mini-roundabout will be retained.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-6accf9c54c1c9\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Cllr Michael Mitchell, Chair of Exeter HATOC, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cWe know many feel strongly about Dryden Road. These plans balance the need to improve traffic flow with keeping the road safe for people walking and cycling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReopening it will provide another route through this part of Exeter. The 20mph limit and other safety measures will help keep speeds down.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n\t<figure class=\"councillor-quote-image grid-x\">\r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small-6 cell medium-12\" src=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/UserData\/0\/9\/5\/Info00011590\/bigpic.jpg\" alt=\"Councillor Michael Mitchell\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\r\n        <figcaption class=\"councillor-quote-description small-6 cell medium-12\" >\r\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=11590\" rel=\"noopener\">Councillor Michael Mitchell<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n            <\/figure>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scheme will cost an estimated \u00a3493,281.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next step will be to formally advertise the changes, including reopening Dryden Road to motor vehicles, extending the 20mph zone and introducing the new speed humps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People will be able to comment on the proposals as part of that process. If objections are received, they are expected to be considered by the committee in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the process has been completed, work could start in April next
