{"id":71449,"date":"2026-09-23T15:02:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T14:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=71449"},"modified":"2026-09-23T15:04:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T14:04:11","slug":"duchy-square-centre-marks-tenth-anniversary-since-re-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/duchy-square-centre-marks-tenth-anniversary-since-re-opening\/","title":{"rendered":"Duchy Square Centre marks tenth anniversary since reopening"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Duchy Square Centre at Princetown marks 10 years since re-opening\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/PU_SsrIAsoE?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s ten years since the Duchy Square Centre in Princetown reopened, and businesses at the centre today say it provides them with everything they need.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We re-opened the centre in 2016 following alterations to the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Duchy Square Centre is currently home to a range of businesses, some well-established and others just starting up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among them is Sew Enchanting, owned by Marie Mayor and Geoff Currell. It just made sense really. The environment\u2019s good, you haven\u2019t got traffic queues, and we\u2019re easily accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got a great bit of space in here. Our fabrics and patterns and our samples are on show, and upstairs we have our embroidery machine, quilting machines and sewing machines where we make the samples to show people. We do pop open to the general public and let them know we\u2019re open via Facebook and other social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs far as creating a business here, you\u2019ve got everything at your disposal. Any business this day and age has to have more fingers in more pies to succeed. Depending on what your business is, as long as you\u2019ve got your online presence there\u2019s no reason why any business couldn\u2019t make it work here. Because we have those other strings to our bow, we\u2019re happy with how we\u2019re doing and where we\u2019re at.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Happy Belly Bakery was only launched just over a year ago by Zelah and Michael Stott after friends in Princetown told them a unit was available at Duchy Square Centre. We have a lot of locals that come to us, and we also do a lot of wholesale to local villages and shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was baking sourdough loaves at home and I used to work at a sourdough bakery. Some friends in Princetown who live very close to Duchy Square said \u2018you should open a bakery\u2019, so that\u2019s how we came to be here really.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The location seems to be working out, with Zelah taking on a bakery assistant last November, and there are plans to expand the bakery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHappy Belly Bakery is a 100% sourdough bakery,\u201d added Zelah. \u201cWe\u2019re the only bakery in Princetown. There\u2019s nothing else like us here, and we\u2019re close to lots of little towns and villages so it\u2019s easy to do deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a longer term plan to be based in Princetown, and hopefully have a shopfront one day. But I do believe if it wasn\u2019t for Duchy Square Centre we wouldn\u2019t have had such a good start as we\u2019ve had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s really helpful having Geoff and Marie next door and Shane and others down the other end because it\u2019s a real sense of community. They\u2019ll pop over and we help each other. We needed to have a proper base where we could store and commission our fire extinguishers, and here at the centre has worked out really well for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re from around this area, so we knew the centre was up here. We had a look around and really liked what we saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a great journey to work in the morning and evening. There\u2019s no rush hour traffic. The only thing you do get is the occasional cow sat in the road!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s worked really well for us. The stroke affected her left hand side and her right forearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stroke damaged her heart irreparably but she is unable to have a transplant, so she\u2019s fitted with a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) \u2013 which is a small pump attached to her heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having had to give up work, an online art course re-ignited her passion for art, and her artwork started to fill up her home. The unit at Duchy Square provides a good space to display her paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Shane said:<\/strong> \u201cThe main benefit of being based at Duchy Square is I get more exposure for my work, but also for me it\u2019s the social side which is very important. I can bring my dog \u2013 she may not think it\u2019s that interesting \u2013 but she\u2019s extremely good. People come in and see her and it starts up a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had so much of my own artwork at home, and I loved the idea of having a shop, but I knew I couldn\u2019t do that, so I was looking for somewhere where I might be able to get more exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s very rewarding when people buy a picture or a couple of cards because they like them. It gives me a sense of purpose and sometimes I think of my school art teacher Mr Hook, and I think my life had to go this way because he was insistent that I did something with my art. Now it\u2019s the only thing that I can really do successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s helped my life being able to be part of the Duchy Square Centre. It\u2019s been a journey but I think I\u2019m where I\u2019m supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shane recently featured in this year\u2019s Devon Open Studios. The event, run by the Devon Artist Network, is the largest of its kind in the region, and over 350 artists and makers opened their doors to visitors across Devon.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-6ab3dc58b0fd9\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Simon Clist, Cabinet Member for Assets and Resources, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cIt\u2019s encouraging that so many different types of businesses are based at the Duchy Square Centre and it\u2019s wonderful to hear that they all agree that locating there has benefited them. The centre is right in the heart of Princetown and when it reopened 10 years ago, the aim was always to help support local businesses across key sectors, including creative, farming, food, and tourism. I\u2019m pleased to see it is still doing that to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n\t<figure
