A one-night closure is planned on Torquay Road in Newton Abbot later this month so an old, unused railway footbridge can be safely removed by crane.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bridge, on the south side of the A381, has been out of use for over a decade and has reached the end of its operational life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its removal is needed to maintain public safety and avoid the ongoing cost of looking after a structure that is no longer used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the footbridge sits above the railway line and next to Torquay Road, specialist lifting equipment will be needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work has been coordinated with Network Rail and will take place overnight on Saturday 19 September to Sunday 20 September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closure will be from 8pm until 9am the following morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However the work is weather dependent and if there are poor weather conditions or there are operational issues that arise the work will be carried out on another weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two contingency dates set aside are Saturday 26 September to Sunday 27 September 2026 and Saturday 3 October to Sunday 4 October 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A signed diversion will be in place during the closures, with advance warning signs displayed in the area before the work starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
