{"id":71248,"date":"2026-09-07T18:09:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T17:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=71248"},"modified":"2026-09-08T08:52:34","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T07:52:34","slug":"local-government-reorganisation-plans-hold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/local-government-reorganisation-plans-hold\/","title":{"rendered":"Local government reorganisation plans on hold"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Government\u2019s announcement to review the reorganisation of local government has received cross-party support from Devon County Council.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Devon County Council Leader Julian Brazil welcomed the decision to pause the plans to create four unitary councils across Devon as \u201cgreat news\u201d while others said the decision provided \u201chope\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Angela Rayner MP told Parliament this afternoon that the decision follows legal advice. She said that effective local government is the foundation of the Government\u2019s devolution plans. The intention of the review is to ensure the process was robust and that reorganisation meets the priorities of new Prime Minster Andy Burnham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-6a9ef2dfbf5ce\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Julian Brazil, Leader of the Council, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cThis is good news for the people of Devon. We now seem to have a Prime Minister who listens and this is a mature decision by the Government. We can work with a Government that listens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt LGR has been costly, but it has been the catalyst to deliver reforms to streamline local government, and we\u2019re working well with district councils on that. We have said all along that you need to let us do it our way. We are best placed to deliver that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the government wants a strong economy, you can\u2019t mess up local government which is one of the building blocks to achieve that. The rethinking on LGR is not just for my generation to be thankful, future generations will come to realise, you don\u2019t throw away a whole system for a few faults, we now have the opportunity to try harder for the future of Devon, and not to waste \u00a380 million on rebranding and reinventing the wheel. This has been a good day for us all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n\t<figure class=\"councillor-quote-image grid-x\">\r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small-6 cell medium-12\" src=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/UserData\/0\/1\/6\/Info00011610\/bigpic.jpg\" alt=\"Councillor Michael Fife Cook\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\r\n        <figcaption class=\"councillor-quote-description small-6 cell medium-12\" >\r\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=11610\" rel=\"noopener\">Councillor Michael Fife Cook, Leader of the Reform Group<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n            <\/figure>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the announcement in Parliament today Angela Rayner MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, said the Government is committed to reorganisation but working \u201cwith local people\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said: \u201cThe Prime Minister told the House last week, he was \u2018prepared to look at local government reorganisation\u2019 and he asked me as his Communities Secretary to &#8216;do that&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn that context, in light of legal advice, I want to satisfy myself firstly that the right process is in place, that it is robust, and of course complies with the law. And secondly, I want to fully test whether our proposals for local government reorganisation meet the priorities of a new administration and a new Prime Minister.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Government also withdrew local government reorganisation decisions made in March for Essex, Hampshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was confirmed that local elections will go ahead in May 2027 on existing council boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
