{"id":71245,"date":"2026-09-07T17:07:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T16:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=71245"},"modified":"2026-09-07T17:23:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T16:23:14","slug":"essential-drainage-works-planned-bickington-road-barnstaple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/essential-drainage-works-planned-bickington-road-barnstaple\/","title":{"rendered":"Essential drainage works planned for Bickington Road, Barnstaple"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We&#8217;re carrying out essential drainage repairs on Bickington Road in Barnstaple between 21 September and 9 October to help prevent flooding and improve safety for road users and pedestrians.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No<\/strong> roads will be closed and the work will be carried out under temporary traffic lights and outside the busiest periods, between 9.15am and 3.15pm each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traffic lights will be staffed to ensure that traffic flows are managed effectively, and to maintain access to Woodville and Linden Gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside those hours, both traffic lanes will be reopened. Additional resources will also be deployed to help ensure the work is completed on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work was originally planned to take place at the same time as work by Wales &amp; West Utilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However those plans have been put on hold &#8211; Wales &amp; West Utilities is currently reviewing its plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drainage work follows a number of localised floods which left both the road and footways underwater, a hazard for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, including children travelling to and from school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigations by our engineers identified significant failures in underground drainage pipes which need to be repaired to restore the system to full working order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The route is also part of the county&#8217;s primary gritting network, meaning the repairs need to be completed before the cold weather sets
