{"id":71196,"date":"2026-09-04T14:42:05","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T13:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=71196"},"modified":"2026-09-04T14:42:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T13:42:09","slug":"work-begins-barnstaple-station-interchange-improvements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/work-begins-barnstaple-station-interchange-improvements\/","title":{"rendered":"Work begins on Barnstaple station interchange improvements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Passengers using Barnstaple Railway Station are set to benefit from a series of improvements designed to make changing between bus<\/strong><strong>es<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>trains<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;easier, safer and more convenient.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We will begin work on the Barnstaple Railway Station Bus Integration Enhancements scheme on September 14, creating a more welcoming and accessible transport interchange while helping to improve connections between public transport services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scheme will increase bus stop capacity, provide upgraded passenger facilities and make it easier and safer for people to move around the station.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scheme is being funded through the Government-backed Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) programme and supports wider efforts to encourage sustainable travel across northern Devon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funding for cycle parking and works to the station entrances is being provided by Great Western Railway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Improvements include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Relocated bus stops to improve connections between bus and rail services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easier access between the station and bus stops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safer crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wider footways outside the station entrance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New and upgraded bus waiting facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Real-time passenger information displays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Road layout changes to simplify vehicle movements and improve safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New cycle parking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rail services and bus services will continue to operate throughout the construction period. No roads will be closed as part of the scheme, although temporary traffic management will be needed at certain stages of the works while changes are made to the road layout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project has been developed in partnership with Great Western Railway, Network Rail and other stakeholders to improve integration between transport services at the station.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction information and any temporary traffic management arrangements will be communicated in advance as work progresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the car park will be used as a site office and compound during the works, leading to a small reduction in parking spaces for customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-6a9acaadaf18b\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>&#8220;This scheme will make it easier for people to switch between bus and rail services, helping passengers complete their journeys more smoothly and comfortably.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The improvements will create a safer, more accessible station environment with better facilities for passengers, while supporting our wider ambition to make public transport a more attractive choice for everyday travel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Importantly, people will still be able to use the station and transport services while the work is carried out, and we are working hard to keep disruption to a minimum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n\t<figure class=\"councillor-quote-image grid-x\">\r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small-6 cell medium-12\" src=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/UserData\/8\/2\/1\/Info00001128\/bigpic.jpg\" alt=\"Councillor Jacqi Hodgson\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\r\n        <figcaption class=\"councillor-quote-description small-6 cell medium-12\" >\r\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=1128\" rel=\"noopener\">Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, Leader of the Green and Independent Group and Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Bio-diversity<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n            <\/figure>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-6a9acaadaf1cd\" class=\"councillor-quote align-left grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>GWR Regional Development Manager (West), David Whiteway Great Western Railway said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>&#8220;Barnstaple station is a key gateway to northern Devon and these improvements will make a real difference for customers travelling by train and bus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Better interchange facilities, improved accessibility and clearer information will help create a smoother journey experience from start to finish.
