The detonator of an explosive shell was discovered at Brunel Road Household Waste Recycling Centre in Newton Abbot on Sunday (14 June 2026), the second such find at the facility in just a week. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police were called and the Royal Navy bomb squad removed the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the third time in the past six months that a suspicious device has been found at one of our recycling centres prompting us to call the police who then contact the military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tank shell was previously found in the non-recyclable waste container at Ivybridge Recycling Centre in January, forcing the site to close for around an hour, while just last week a grenade was found, also at Brunel Road Recycling Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each time this happens it requires a response from emergency services – and it needlessley inconviences both staff and residents using the facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Users are, once again, being urged to think carefully before bringing items to recycling centres, particularly if they are old, unlabelled, or could be mistaken for something hazardous.<\/p>\n\n\n

Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, Cabinet Member responsible for waste services, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n \t\t

\u201cOnce again we\u2019ve had to call the police due to a suspected explosive device being found at our Brunel Road facility. <\/p>\n

“These incidents are entirely preventable and place unnecessary pressure on emergency services, disrupt our staff, and inconvenience the public.<\/p>\n

“Items such as explosives, flares, fireworks and ammunition must never be brought to our sites.<\/p>\n

“By taking simple precautions, everyone can help keep our centres safe. I\u2019d like to thank our site teams, the police, and the Royal Navy for their swift and professional response.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n
