{"id":70102,"date":"2026-06-16T16:25:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T15:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=70102"},"modified":"2026-06-16T16:25:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T15:25:31","slug":"exeter-spotlight-clean-air-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/exeter-spotlight-clean-air-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Exeter in spotlight for Clean Air Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>People in Exeter are being asked to make one&nbsp;small change&nbsp;to their usual journey on Clean Air Day, this Thursday, 18 June.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign calls on the community to come together this Clean Air Day and&nbsp;make&nbsp;one less non-essential car trip&nbsp;which&nbsp;can save money and boost your physical and mental wellbeing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign is being backed by Devon County Council, Exeter City Council, Exeter College, the University of Exeter, Public Health Devon and the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust,&nbsp;and the Met Office.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clean Air Day is the UK\u2019s biggest campaign on air pollution and encourages simple changes such as walking, cycling, sharing a lift, using public&nbsp;transport&nbsp;or leaving the car at home for one short trip.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traffic in urban areas such as Exeter is a major source of air pollution, including nitrogen dioxide. Particle pollution also comes from tyre and brake wear, as well as from wood burning,&nbsp;construction&nbsp;and agriculture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport makes up around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/committees.exeter.gov.uk\/documents\/s103601\/City%20Wide%20Net%20Zero%20Appendix%20-%20Exeter_GHGInventory_2023.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">24&nbsp;per cent<\/a>*&nbsp;of&nbsp;Exeter\u2019s&nbsp;greenhouse gas emissions and&nbsp;97%of that comes from road transport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air pollution is one of the UK\u2019s biggest environmental risks to health and is linked to heart disease,&nbsp;stroke&nbsp;and breathing problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while air quality in Exeter has improved over time and is better than in many parts of the country, polluted air still affects people\u2019s health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exeter\u2019s estimated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fingertips.phe.org.uk\/search\/air%20pollution\" rel=\"noopener\">mortality rate<\/a>**&nbsp;linked to particulate air pollution is&nbsp;<strong>4.2%<\/strong>, compared with&nbsp;<strong>4.3%<\/strong>&nbsp;across the&nbsp;South West&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>5.3%<\/strong>&nbsp;nationally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/committees.exeter.gov.uk\/documents\/s101064\/ASR%20Final.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Exeter City Council<\/a>*** says&nbsp;children, older people and those with heart and lung conditions are most affected, with lower-income communities also at greater risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research also suggests people can sometimes be exposed to more pollution sitting in traffic than walking or cycling nearby.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-6a316ae744126\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Professor Stewart Barr, an environmental social scientist specialising in public responses to environmental issues, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p> \u201cResearch shows the combined benefits of walking,\u00a0cycling\u00a0and wheeling for both the environment and personal health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are everyday travel habits that can help cut congestion, improve local air quality and tackle climate change, while also boosting physical and mental wellbeing through exercise and greater connection with the world around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-6a316ae744158\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>teve Brown, Devon\u2019s Director of Public Health, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>S\u201cThis is not about telling people how they should travel. It is about asking whether there is one trip they could do differently that day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat could mean walking, cycling, sharing a\u00a0lift\u00a0or using public transport. Cleaner air benefits everyone, especially children, older\u00a0people\u00a0and people with existing health conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p
