{"id":69405,"date":"2026-04-10T10:47:38","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T09:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=69405"},"modified":"2026-04-10T10:47:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T09:47:41","slug":"used-coffee-pods-are-now-accepted-recycling-centres-where-they-will-go-produce-renewable-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/used-coffee-pods-are-now-accepted-recycling-centres-where-they-will-go-produce-renewable-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"Used coffee pods are now accepted at recycling centres where they will go on to produce renewable energy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>From this week we&#8217;re accepting coffee pods at our Household Waste Recycling Centres where they will go on to be recycled and produce renewable energy and other products.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It follows a new a new partnership with Podback, the coffee pod recycling service, and SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd, who operate Devon County Council\u2019s Household Waste Recycling centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Used aluminium and plastic coffee, tea and hot chocolate pods can be collected and stored at home, then taken to a Recycling Centre and emptied loose into the clearly marked containers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bags and other packaging must not be included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic and aluminium pods must be separated, as they are recycled at different facilities. All pods collected are recycled in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are shredded to remove the coffee, with the plastic and aluminium used to make new products such as packaging, car components and building materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coffee grounds are treated through anaerobic digestion to produce renewable energy (biogas) and a soil improver.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-69d8c5c37e7f4\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for waste services, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cThis makes it much easier to recycle them properly instead of throwing them away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s right that manufacturers are taking responsibility for funding this service and are ensuring that their products are recyclable\u00a0and it helps reduce the amount of waste going for disposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d just ask people to store their pods and bring them along when they\u2019re already visiting a recycling centre, rather than making a special trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n\t<figure class=\"councillor-quote-image grid-x\">\r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small-6 cell medium-12\" src=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/UserData\/8\/2\/1\/Info00001128\/bigpic.jpg\" alt=\"Councillor Jacqi Hodgson\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\r\n        <figcaption class=\"councillor-quote-description small-6 cell medium-12\" >\r\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=1128\" rel=\"noopener\">Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, Leader of the Green and Independent Group and Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Bio-diversity<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n            <\/figure>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-69d8c5c37e870\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Rob Sanders, Regional Manager at SUEZ, which operates Devon\u2019s Household Waste Recycling Centres, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a small change that will make a big difference.
