{"id":69079,"date":"2026-03-11T17:01:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=69079"},"modified":"2026-03-13T14:24:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T14:24:49","slug":"additional-3-million-agreed-support-devons-road-repairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/additional-3-million-agreed-support-devons-road-repairs\/","title":{"rendered":"Additional \u00a33 million agreed to support Devon\u2019s road repairs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Councillors have agreed to allocate an additional \u00a33 million for highways reactive maintenance in the current financial year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cabinet&#8217;s decision today, (Wednesday 11 March), reflects the severe winter weather experienced across Devon and the impact this has had on the county\u2019s extensive road network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The additional funding will help address the increased maintenance pressures created by winter weather and recent storms, supporting work to repair potholes, respond to winter damage and deal with the effects of storm conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter weather has led to a significant increase in highways reactive work across the county. For example, reported potholes in February 2026 were 9,700 &#8211; 90% higher than the same period last year. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current projections indicate that an additional \u00a33 million will be required this year to respond to increased demand for pothole repairs, winter gritting and storm recovery work following storms Goretti, Ingrid and Chandra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes emergency works to protect coastal properties at Slapton, Torcross and Beesands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This investment comes alongside the significant increase in highways funding already agreed for the year ahead. As part of the 2026\u201327 budget approved by Full Council, the council has committed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over \u00a336 million for highways maintenance, an increase of \u00a36 million compared with the previous year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than \u00a3100 million in capital investment for preventative maintenance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-69b41e2de3511\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor James Buczkowski, Devon County Council&#8217;s Cabinet Member with responsibility for finance,\u00a0 said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p><!-- wp:paragraph --><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\u201cDevon has one of the largest road networks in the country, and periods of severe winter weather inevitably take their toll. The additional \u00a33 million agreed today will help address the pressures created by storms and winter conditions across the network.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->&#8220;It also sits alongside the significant increase in highways funding we have already agreed for next year, including over \u00a336 million for highways maintenance and more than \u00a3100 million for preventative maintenance on our roads.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->&#8220;Maintaining Devon\u2019s roads is essential for residents, businesses and rural communities who rely on them every day.
