{"id":68709,"date":"2026-02-03T12:30:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T12:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=68709"},"modified":"2026-02-04T11:43:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T11:43:34","slug":"damage-a379-slapton-being-assessed-being-partially-washed-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/damage-a379-slapton-being-assessed-being-partially-washed-away\/","title":{"rendered":"Damage to A379 Slapton being assessed after being partially washed away"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Devon County Council highways teams are assessing damage to the A379 at Slapton after parts of the road were washed away overnight.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council has been working around the clock over the past week to add extra rock protection to the southern section of the road at Torcross, following initial damage to the road during Storm Ingrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the southern section of the road and sheet piling at Torcross has now suffered significant damage, with one lane collapsed on a section of around 200 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of South Hams District Council\u2019s \u201cTorcross Tank\u201d car park has also been lost, and properties in Torcross have been damaged as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Damage to A379 Slapton being assessed after being partially washed away\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/QbaF3kc3Qiw?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Julian Brazil, Devon County Council Leader and local County Councillor for Kingsbridge, is in London today with Devon County Council Chief Executive Donna Manson to discuss central government funding support for Devon\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-6983306569f7c\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Julian Brazil, Devon County Council Leader, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s devastating for the local community, and our priority is the families whose lives and livelihoods are directly affected by this. The route is not looking good and we\u2019re likely to be looking at tens of millions of pounds to repair it. The County can\u2019t afford to rebuild the road and we\u2019re desperately looking for help from government. Our teams are on site and we&#8217;re working with partners to assess the situation and work out what our next steps will be. However, the extent of the damage overnight is a major setback and that option is no longer possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further investigations now also need be carried out on the full extent of the road between Torcross and Strete Gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last time the road had been washed away in severe weather was during Storm Emma in March 2018, but it re-opened later that year after an extensive repair
