{"id":68388,"date":"2026-01-16T10:10:24","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T10:10:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=68388"},"modified":"2026-01-16T10:18:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T10:18:50","slug":"fast-fashion-forces-closure-of-27-salvation-army-clothing-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/fast-fashion-forces-closure-of-27-salvation-army-clothing-banks\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Fast fashion&#8217; forces closure of 27 Salvation Army clothing banks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Residents in parts of Devon may notice changes to their local textile bank service, as&nbsp;twenty-seven&nbsp;Salvation Army&nbsp;banks are due to be removed at the end of January 2026.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL),&nbsp;on behalf of its parent charity, has&nbsp;worked in&nbsp;partnership with the Devon Authorities&nbsp;since 2016&nbsp;to provide a textile recycling service&nbsp;across Devon.&nbsp;&nbsp;A recent&nbsp;SATCoL&nbsp;statement&nbsp;explains the reasons:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cFollowing a strategic review of our clothing bank network in response to changing market conditions, and to ensure long-term sustainability and responsible stewardship of donations, we are adjusting our clothing bank network. This change will enable us to use our resources more effectively to manage the unsustainable volumes of used textiles across the UK.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>As part of this review,&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;clothing banks will be removed. However, many other banks&nbsp;remain&nbsp;available for public use, and we continue to expand our network of more than 250 charity stores. These changes allow us to maximise fundraising capabilities, minimise costs, and redirect resources to other impactful reuse and recycling services.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>We are grateful for the continued support from members of the public, our&nbsp;donors&nbsp;and partners. Fast fashion,&nbsp;and now ultra-fast fashion,&nbsp;has&nbsp;flooded&nbsp;the textile market&nbsp;with low quality&nbsp;and&nbsp;low value&nbsp;garments.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;estimated that more than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more&nbsp;than any other country in Europe. That amount produces&nbsp;nearly 50&nbsp;tonnes of carbon emissions, the same as driving 162,000 miles in a car.&nbsp;In one month alone, the carbon footprint of new clothes bought in the UK was greater than flying a plane around the world 900 times&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org.uk\/oxfam-in-action\/oxfam-blog\/new-shocking-facts-about-the-impact-of-fast-fashion-on-our-climate\/\" rel=\"noopener\">(Oxfam)<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-696a0e9056b59\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right other has-white-color has-black-background-color grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, vice Chair of the Devon Authorities Strategic Waste Committee, said:\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cThe rise in cheap,\u00a0low quality\u00a0clothing is causing a huge problem for the\u00a0second hand\u00a0textile\u00a0industry and the environment.\u00a0We have worked with\u00a0SATCoL\u00a0for many years and\u00a0understand the difficulties of the textile markets. It is disappointing to lose\u00a0thetextile\u00a0banks\u00a0but we\u00a0support their decision to scale back. The future of\u00a0second hand\u00a0textiles is\u00a0looking challenging but we,\u00a0as consumers,\u00a0have the power to make a difference by making more environmentally sustainable choices\u00a0every time we buy new clothing.\u00a0Even better, we can choose to buy less\u00a0and\u00a0make the most of the clothes we already have.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n\t<figure class=\"councillor-quote-image grid-x\">\r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small-6 cell medium-12\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/146\/2026\/01\/Cllr-Hodgson.jpg\" alt=\"Cllr Hodgson\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\r\n        <figcaption class=\"councillor-quote-description small-6 cell medium-12\" >\r\n            \t        Cllr Jacqi Hodgson, Vice Chair of the Devon Authorities Strategic Waste Committee            <\/figure>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p>Given that the average UK&nbsp;adult&nbsp;has upwards of 118 items of clothing in their wardrobe,&nbsp;and a quarter of those items have not been worn for at least a year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrap.ngo\/media-centre\/press-releases\/nations-wardrobes-hold-16-billion-items-unworn-clothes-people-open-new\" rel=\"noopener\">WRAP<\/a>), the first question to ask is whether we really need to buy anything new at all. Instead, can we utilise the clothes we&nbsp;already own by repairing or altering them?&nbsp;Refresh your wardrobe&nbsp;without the hefty price tag&nbsp;by swapping items you no longer wear with&nbsp;friends or&nbsp;buying and&nbsp;selling via online&nbsp;second&nbsp;hand&nbsp;platforms. Another&nbsp;option&nbsp;is to organise a clothes swap with friends and\/or family \u2013 for more information and to borrow a clothes swap kit,&nbsp;visit the Recycle Devon website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clothing that needs repairing can be taken to a local Repair Cafe, where volunteers can undertake basic repairs such as sewing on buttons, mending holes, fixing hems etc for free, although a small donation is welcome.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.recycledevon.org\/community-groups-map\/\" rel=\"noopener\">A map of Repair Cafes can be found on the Recycle Devon website<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents&nbsp;impacted&nbsp;by the service changes can recycle their textiles&nbsp;as follows:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find an alternative textile bank\u00a0using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.recyclenow.com\/recycle-an-item\/clothing-textiles\" rel=\"noopener\">Recycle Now locator<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take textiles to\u00a0your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/wasteandrecycling\/centre\/\">nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many\u00a0high street clothing\u00a0retailers provide textile recycling facilities in-store \u2013 check with your nearest store for more information\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Donate to your local charity shop \u2013 please check beforehand that they are accepting donations.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arrange a doorstep collection from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/anglodoorstepcollections.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Anglo<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some local councils accept\u00a0small amounts\u00a0of textiles in the household recycling collection service.\u00a0\u00a0<a
