{"id":68094,"date":"2025-12-12T15:55:51","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T15:55:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=68094"},"modified":"2025-12-12T15:55:55","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T15:55:55","slug":"residents-urged-to-check-tumble-dryers-after-fire-risk-alert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/residents-urged-to-check-tumble-dryers-after-fire-risk-alert\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents urged to check tumble dryers after fire risk alert"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Householders across Devon, Plymouth, Somerset and Torbay are being warned by Trading Standards to stop using certain integrated heat pump tumble dryers immediately after a national safety alert revealed a serious fire risk.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The warning, issued by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), affects models produced by Haier and sold under several well-known brands, Baumatic, Candy, Caple, Haier, Hoover, Lamona, Iberna and Montpellier. Around 85,000 appliances are believed to still be in homes across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fault involves an internal short circuit that can occur during normal use, potentially causing a fire. Haier began repairs earlier this year, but the initial fix was found to be inadequate. The company has now resumed a programme of enhanced repairs and is contacting owners to arrange free safety work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers are advised to stop using the affected dryers immediately and, if possible, unplug them. Owners should check their model and serial number on the manufacturer\u2019s website and arrange a free repair if their appliance is listed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-693c3b0765818\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Fakir Mohammed Osman, Head of Heart of the South West Trading Standards, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cThe risk posed by these dryers is very real \u2014 an internal short circuit can spark a fire without warning. We urge all residents to check their appliances today. Even if you\u2019ve had a repair before, you must ensure the updated fixing has been applied.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n    \r\n
