{"id":67986,"date":"2025-12-04T11:43:55","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T11:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=67986"},"modified":"2025-12-12T11:25:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T11:25:34","slug":"devon-schools-join-forces-for-a-greener-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/devon-schools-join-forces-for-a-greener-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Devon schools join forces for a greener future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Schools across Devon are taking big steps towards sustainability after a successful Schools Sustainability Conference last week.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event, held at Sandy Park was the first of its kind organised by Devon Education Services with the support of Devon Climate Emergency and Recycle Devon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It brought together 80 teachers and staff from primary, secondary, early years, and special schools to share ideas and create practical plans to tackle climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also an opportunity for schools to come together and seek advice on creating a climate action plan \u2013 the Department for Education requires all educational settings to have a nominated \u2018sustainability lead\u2019 in place and a Climate Action Plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day included talks, workshops, and panel discussions on making schools more eco-friendly, bio-diversity, cutting energy use, reducing waste, boosting wildlife projects and the importance of \u2018adaptation\u2019 \u2013 actions communities, organisations and individuals can take&nbsp; to help reduce our vulnerability to the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attendees also explored ways to access funding and heard from schools already leading the way. An exhibition showcased useful resources and expert advice on renewable energy, eco-friendly products, and waste reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phil Randall, Headteacher at St Peter\u2019s C of E VA School, said: \u201cCreating a Climate Action Plan is a great chance to make a real difference. With the right support, we can make smart and bold decisions for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jamie Stone, Headteacher at Denbury Primary School, added: \u201cAs a group of local schools, we\u2019ve worked closely with Devon County Council to create our own action plans. This help has been invaluable. Events like this have made sure we\u2019re ready for the 2025 deadline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event also highlighted the work of Recycle Devon\u2019s Waste Education Team, which offers free workshops and assemblies on recycling, composting, and tackling marine litter. They also run free school trips to Energy from Waste plants in Exeter and Plymouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their Watch Our Waste (WOW) programme encourages pupils to take action and cut waste throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bobby Hughes, from Devon County Council and one of the organisers, said: \u201cThis conference has been a brilliant team effort. Teachers left feeling inspired, ready to take action. We\u2019re committed to working together to help schools become more sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Wells, a class teacher and sustainability lead, summed it up: \u201cToday has been like a green light \u2013 giving me the go-ahead to help children and colleagues make a big difference through small changes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-693bfbaace5f1\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, Devon County Council\u2019s Cabinet Member for or Climate Change and Biodiversity said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>&#8220;This conference is a vital step in giving schools the tools they need to take meaningful climate action. By working together, we can inspire the next generation to lead the way in creating a greener, more resilient Devon.
