{"id":67348,"date":"2025-10-03T14:27:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T13:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=67348"},"modified":"2025-10-03T14:28:26","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T13:28:26","slug":"trading-standards-winter-fuel-scam-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/trading-standards-winter-fuel-scam-warning\/","title":{"rendered":"Trading standards winter fuel scam warning"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Residents across the region are being warned of text message winter fuel payment scams.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The text invites people to apply \u2013 but Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service, which covers Devon, Somerset, Torbay and Plymouth, says that most eligible people would receive the winter fuel payment automatically and wouldn\u2019t need to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s part of a \u2018phishing\u2019 scam where criminals attempt to trick people into giving up their personal and financial information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scam usually involves fraudsters sending fake text messages or emails, or making phone calls, claiming to be from a government department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The messages often say the recipient needs to \u2018apply\u2019 for a winter fuel payment or that they haven&#8217;t submitted their application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They include a link to a fake government website where you are asked to enter personal details, including bank account information.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-68dfcf77acb42\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Janet Quinn, the lead officer for scams at trading standards, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>&#8220;If you get a text like this, report it by forwarding it for free to 7726 then delete it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriminals send these messages to phish for your details so they can try to scam you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t open the message or text back saying you are not interested as that will show them that the number is a real number.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p>You can report suspicious emails by forwarding them to <a href=\"mailto:report@phishing.gov.uk\">report@phishing.gov.uk<\/a> and report text messages by forwarding them for free to 7726.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you\u2019ve lost money in a scam, stop all contact with the scammer and tell your bank immediately. You can call 159 to get through to your bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Report the scam to <a
