{"id":67306,"date":"2025-10-01T09:53:50","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T08:53:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=67306"},"modified":"2025-10-01T10:39:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T09:39:09","slug":"okehampton-interchange-taking-shape-with-lift-shaft-and-footbridge-installed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/okehampton-interchange-taking-shape-with-lift-shaft-and-footbridge-installed\/","title":{"rendered":"Okehampton Interchange taking shape with lift shaft and footbridge installed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Okehampton Interchange, the newest station in the West, is a big step closer to welcoming passengers after a major stage of construction was completed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lift shaft, footbridge span and staircase have all been lifted into place, with the Devon station now beginning to take shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okehampton Interchange is a \u00a315m project, made possible thanks to Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council successfully bidding for Government funding, together with contributions from both authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new fully accessible station, being built by Network Rail and its contractor Octavius, is set to open in summer 2026. It will be the newest addition to the Dartmoor Line, complementing the existing Okehampton station, and provide an hourly train to connect West Devon, Torridge and North Cornwall with Exeter and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over three midweek nights, a 350-tonne crane was used to move the steel structures from what will become the station car park, over the railway and into position for the new station. The lift shaft, four columns to support the staircase, and three sections of the staircase itself were successfully installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/146\/2025\/10\/News-Page-size-29-1-800x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/146\/2025\/10\/News-Page-size-29-1-800x450.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/146\/2025\/10\/News-Page-size-29-1-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/146\/2025\/10\/News-Page-size-29-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/146\/2025\/10\/News-Page-size-29-1-640x360.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/146\/2025\/10\/News-Page-size-29-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/146\/2025\/10\/News-Page-size-29-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Guests gathered on visit to Okehampton Interchange site<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 25m-long footbridge was then lifted into place six metres above the railway in two sections. The bridge will allow access from the 200-space car park to the station\u2019s single platform. The 100m platform will be supported by 107 coping stones that have been laid. Work now continues to complete construction in spring next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe latest progress at Okehampton Interchange is an exciting step forward for the local community and, thanks to \u00a315m in Government support, it will soon unlock countless benefits, including improved regional connectivity and modern services that local people can rely on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Alongside the dedicated work of local councils, we&#8217;re on track with our Plan for Change commitment to deliver growth, jobs and homes through a modern railway that Britain needs and deserves. I look forward to seeing the station open next year.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Network Rail industry programme director Bogdan Lupu said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur plans are now coming to life and the footbridge platform structure is now in place, marking a major milestone in the project\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone can now see it really coming together and our work continues to get passengers onto the platform as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-68dcf6b64f093\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Devon County Council cabinet member for climate change and biodiversity Councillor Jacqi Hodgson said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cIt&#8217;s good to see how work on Okehampton Interchange is coming along and it has really taken some major steps forward in recent weeks. With the footbridge installed you can start to visualise what the station will eventually look like and it&#8217;s certainly impressive.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be a huge asset, not just for Okehampton, but for the wider area as well.
