{"id":66464,"date":"2025-07-07T13:31:24","date_gmt":"2025-07-07T12:31:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=66464"},"modified":"2026-01-26T17:35:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T17:35:22","slug":"devons-planned-road-maintenance-schemes-now-listed-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/devons-planned-road-maintenance-schemes-now-listed-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Devon\u2019s planned road maintenance schemes now listed online"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>You can now view a comprehensive list of highway maintenance work planned for our roads this financial year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/roads-and-transport\/maintaining-roads\/local-highways-maintenance-transparency-report\/\">published the information on our website<\/a>, in line with Department for Transport (DfT) guidelines for local highway authorities to show local taxpayers how highways funding is being used in their area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our webpages include information on more than 1,420 schemes in the capital highway maintenance programme \u2013 covering everything from resurfacing, patching, surface dressing, drainage improvements, and road marking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preventative treatments will cover around 260 miles (420km) of the highway network and covers work such as surface dressing and footway \u201cslurry seal\u201d (a top surface material for pavements).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Watch one of our Dragon Patchers in action\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/L5Rg4pwjN5E?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_acf-block-686be3ce31f3a\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Dan Thomas, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cThis document provides people with information on all of the planned maintenance on Devon&#8217;s highway network, and hopefully it also gives people a better understanding of the planning that goes into maintaining our roads. It&#8217;s an unenviable task as unfortunately, due to decades of underfunding from central government, we simply don&#8217;t receive enough money and therefore repairs have to be prioritised.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our highways teams do much more than just fill potholes &#8211; they&#8217;re carrying out preventative maintenance before potholes can form in the first place. We will continue our efforts to find innovative solutions, through new materials, more efficient machinery, and trialling different ways of working to get the best value from every pound spent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n\t<figure class=\"councillor-quote-image grid-x\">\r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small-6 cell medium-12\" src=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/UserData\/8\/3\/7\/Info00005738\/bigpic.jpg\" alt=\"Councillor Dan Thomas\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\r\n        <figcaption class=\"councillor-quote-description small-6 cell medium-12\" >\r\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=5738\" rel=\"noopener\">Councillor Dan Thomas, Cabinet Member for Highways<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n            <\/figure>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devon&#8217;s 8,000-mile road network is the biggest of any authority in the country and is the equivalent length of covering a third of the circumference of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The County Council\u2019s highway maintenance strategy recognises that it\u2019s not possible to maintain every road to the same standard, due to limited budgets and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council will continue to prioritise available funding for A and B roads, which are the busiest parts of the network and carry around 80% of traffic in the county. The remaining budget is spread across Devon\u2019s lengthy road network of C roads and unclassified roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investment is also being made in preventative maintenance, such as surface dressing, to manage and extend the lifespan of roads. However, nearly 59,000 potholes were fixed last year and it\u2019s expected that a similar number will be repaired this financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A full list of the <a
