Since 2019 almost 10,000 items have been repaired at BIG FIX events.

By repairing old items, it saves people money and gives menders the chance to pass on valuable skills and tips to help visitors to fix their own items in the future.

Repair Cafés are increasing in popularity as people are becoming more budget and environmentally conscious.

They are organised and run by volunteers who offer their time and skills for free. It also gives people the chance to socialise over a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

At a recent High Bickington and Atherington Repair Café a visitor called Sarah said: “They have never failed at sorting the items that I bring in. Shears and secateurs have been sharpened, hedge trimmers are now running smoothly, and clothes are fitting much better now they’re repaired. All are given a new lease of life and saved from the tip!”

One repairer added: “I’ve always enjoyed fixing things, and I love to see the look on someone’s face when they realise that it’s working again. I get great satisfaction in repairing things that otherwise would be thrown away.

“It’s always great fun and I get to meet wonderful like-minded people. I feel really proud to be part of such a positive and proactive community group.

“The social aspect that it provides is a joy with families, the old and the young all coming along and connecting with others. Oh yes, and the cake and coffee are great!”

Jennifer Cooper, Devon County Council’s Re-use Project Officer, said:

“A couple of events have already taken place, in Bideford and Milton Keynes, and they were hugely successful but there are so many more to go over the next few weeks!

“Check our blog and you can find when and where the next event is taking place. Repair Cafés are wonderful places where communities can come together to share skills and have a catch-up, while helping your pocket and the planet at the same time.

“Collectively every day we throw away thousands of items which, if given a little attention, could be easily repaired. Repair Cafés are an ideal way to save money and reduce waste. Visitors can take broken items to be fixed, learn tips and tricks from skilled menders on how to make future repairs themselves and it’s also a great place for people to meet and a
