{"id":65533,"date":"2025-02-27T17:06:16","date_gmt":"2025-02-27T17:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=65533"},"modified":"2025-05-12T16:58:27","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:58:27","slug":"devon-schools-among-the-first-phase-of-the-governments-breakfast-club-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/devon-schools-among-the-first-phase-of-the-governments-breakfast-club-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"Devon schools among the first phase of the Government\u2019s breakfast club programme"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Twenty five schools in Devon are among the first in the country to offer free, daily breakfast clubs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/first-schools-confirmed-for-landmark-free-breakfast-clubs\" rel=\"noopener\">the Government has confirmed<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From April, all primary aged children in schools identified in the first phase of the Government programme will be able to access a free breakfast and at least 30 minutes of free childcare every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The free breakfast clubs will be available for half an hour before the start of the school day. It&#8217;s thought that they will support parents getting into work by enabling them to drop their children off half an hour earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the introduction of funded (free) breakfast clubs, which will be available for half an hour before the start of the school day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schools in the first phase were chosen from across England, in locations where there aren&#8217;t currently breakfast clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the schools will receive Government funding towards food and staffing costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The schools identified in Devon include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Broadclyst Community Primary School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>East Worlington Primary School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St Mary&#8217;s Catholic Primary School, Axminster<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bearnes Voluntary Primary School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Charleton Church of England Academy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thurlestone All Saints Church of England Academy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lew Trenchard Church of England Primary School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dunsford Community Academy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whipton Barton Junior School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whipton Barton Infants and Nursery School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lifton Community Academy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beaford Community Primary &amp; Nursery School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St Sidwell&#8217;s Church of England Primary School &amp; Nursery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Horwood and Newton Tracey Community Primary School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St Andrew&#8217;s Church of England Academy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sandford School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ilfracombe Infant and Nursery School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shebbear Community School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tavistock Primary &amp; Nursery School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stoke Canon Church of England Primary School and Pre-School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Goodleigh Church of England Primary School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St Catherine&#8217;s CofE Primary School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Glendinning Academy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ellen Tinkham School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bidwell Brook School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The schools are encouraged to offer healthy, varied and nutritious breakfasts. They&#8217;ll also provide settings to host activities, including arts and crafts, educational puzzles, reading and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Government&#8217;s announcement this week said that universal free breakfasts are central to its plans, removing barriers to opportunity by making sure every child starts the day ready to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said that breakfast clubs have been shown to boost children&#8217;s reading, writing and maths by an average two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that breakfast clubs are part of a raft of Government measures designed to cut the cost of living for families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning from the schools in the first phase of programme will shape the future of the Government&#8217;s national breakfast club policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Parents and carers are asked to speak to their school first before booking their child into their breakfast club from April.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Breakfast Clubs will compliment the current \u2018wraparound childcare programme\u2019, where childcare wraps around the school day \u2013 from at least 8am to at least 5:30pm. Wraparound funding is already available from the Government for schools to apply for.  <a
