Our trading standards officers were joined by police last week for an operation in Exmouth where illegal tobacco products and vapes worth more than \u00a310,000 were discovered by detection dogs and seized from two stores. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It puts the total value of illegal tobacco products seized by Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service so far this year to almost \u00a3150,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total 444 illegal vapes with an estimated value of \u00a38,000, 417 packets of illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of \u00a32,085 and 107 pouches of hand-rolling tobacco worth almost \u00a31000 were confiscated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tobacco was a mix of counterfeit and non-duty paid and the vapes were not suitable for UK sale due to being non-compliant with tobacco and related products regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of the year Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service has seized approximately \u00a3118,000 worth of illicit tobacco and approximately \u00a337,000 of illicit vapes.<\/p>\n\n\n

Alex Fry, Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service\u2019s Operations Manager, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n \t\t

\u201dThe removal of illegal tobacco and vapes from entering the marketplace is a high priority for us, and this was yet another successful operation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe service uses detection dogs so regardless of where it is hidden, in a storage container or retail premises, the dogs have the ability to sniff out even small quantities of tobacco and vapes that are hidden from view.<\/p>\n

\u201cRetail outlets that sell counterfeit and illicit tobacco are big business and these shops can undercut other local general stores who are trying to operate legally during difficult economic conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n \r\n <\/div>\n\n\n

Councillor Rufus Gilbert, Devon County Council\u2019s Cabinet Member responsible for Trading Standards, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n \t\t

\u201cCriminals are not interested in asking for proof of age and sell tobacco at pocket money prices to children who would otherwise be unable to legally purchase tobacco products and it encourages them to become smokers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe proceeds of tobacco fraud is often laundered and used to fund other criminal activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n

Inspector Grant Leitch of Devon and Cornwall Police said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n \t\t

\u201cCarrying out this proactive operation resulted in a significant amount of counterfeit goods being removed from the streets and circulation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to urge members of the public to report concerns to us so we can continue to disrupt illegal activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n \r\n <\/div>\n\n\n
