{"id":63606,"date":"2024-07-09T14:26:47","date_gmt":"2024-07-09T13:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=63606"},"modified":"2024-09-16T16:31:56","modified_gmt":"2024-09-16T15:31:56","slug":"marsh-barton-station-celebrates-its-1st-birthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/marsh-barton-station-celebrates-its-1st-birthday\/","title":{"rendered":"Marsh Barton station celebrates its 1st birthday"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Devon\u2019s newest station has celebrated its first birthday and those involved in the grand opening marked the special day with a celebratory cake.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Festivities were in full swing on Monday 8 July, following the first anniversary of the opening of the station. In that time more than 90,000 passenger journeys have been made, benefitting local residents and businesses in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from Devon County Council, Great Western Railway, Network Rail and local dignitaries met at the station for the special celebration and cut the birthday cake.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_f24ee1c71b2e54c2e1d57569fa43f04a\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Andrea Davis, our Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cWe are thrilled with the success of Marsh Barton station. The user numbers demonstrate that more people are taking advantage of the Devon Metro network to make journeys into the city for work and appointments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the pressure on the city\u2019s road network, reducing congestion and improving air quality are key aims for the Council, more people choosing to use public transport is great news for residents and visitors to the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n\t<figure class=\"councillor-quote-image grid-x\">\r\n\t\t<img <\/div>\n\n\n<p>We delivered the \u00a316 million project in collaboration with Network Rail and Great Western Railway (GWR) and it was built by construction and civil engineering specialist firm GRAHAM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>GWR Head of Strategic Development Matthew Barnes said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNew stations such as Marsh Barton are vital in bringing the railway closer to people as we all become more mindful to live and travel more sustainably.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMarsh Barton is a real success story and the passenger numbers clearly show how important good transport links are for the local economy, to local people, businesses and the wider community.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>First passenger services began at Marsh Barton on Tuesday 4 July, when it became Exeter\u2019s ninth railway station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The station is served by hourly Great Western Railway services between Paignton and Exmouth, with more at peak times and improves travel links between Alphington, Marsh Barton, and the Riverside Valley Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Chris Fuoco, Network Rail Devon and Cornwall director, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuilding another new station for the south west was a fantastic achievement by everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve brought even more people onto the railway and shown the value of rail to the local economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The station features two fully accessible platforms equipped with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ticket machines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smart ticket readers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Live train departure screens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waiting shelters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help points<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The two platforms are linked by a pedestrian overbridge which has ramps to facilitate cyclists and provide disabled access to the whole station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marsh Barton was the second of three new Great Western Railway (GWR) stations opened last year along with Reading Green Park (opened in May) and Portway Park &amp; Ride (opened in).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two more stations, at Cullompton and Wellington, are due to be opened as part of the Government\u2019s \u2018Restoring your Railways\u2019 initiative and will see the two largest settlements on the line between Exeter and Taunton reconnected to the railway after both stations closed in
