Our Cabinet Member for services that support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, (SEND), Councillor Lois Samuel, has congratulated Marland School for achieving an \u2018outstanding\u2019 grade following a recent Ofsted inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marland School, in Torrington, is part of a foundation trust of other special schools and provides residential care for up to 40 boys aged eight to 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ofsted visited in February to look at their social care provision and their inspectors were impressed with what they saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They said the experiences and progress of the children, leadership in the school and how well children and young people were helped and protected were all \u2018outstanding\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report reads: \u201cThe school provides highly effective services that consistently exceed the standards of good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe actions of the school contribute to significantly improved outcomes and positive experiences for children and young people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inspectors said that children \u2018thrive\u2019 at the school, and that this was largely down to \u2018an exceptionally stable and well-trained staff team\u2019 who provide \u2018consistency, predictability and security\u2019 for the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The children who stayed in the residential facilities, said the report, benefited from \u2018carefully planned\u2019 evening activities which were \u2018ambitious and creative.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Children at the school enjoy a wide range of activities, such as trips to the woods, visits to skateparks, swimming and the cinema for example \u2013 and it is this variety that helps children develop problem-solving skills, their confidence and communication skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHigh staffing levels, and the degree of individual support that this affords to children, helps to allow them exceptional choice,\u201d adds the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked, one child said that they felt \u2018lucky\u2019 to have the opportunities that they do and they recognised that staff go \u2018over and above\u2019 for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One parent described staff as \u2018incredible\u2019 at supporting them as a family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Staff regularly seek children’s views about their care and inspectors said that children were making \u2018exceptional progress\u2019, gaining qualifications and developing their own aspirations for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n
