{"id":58719,"date":"2022-12-08T14:58:26","date_gmt":"2022-12-08T14:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=58719"},"modified":"2023-01-12T14:35:37","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T14:35:37","slug":"rita-seatons-lollipop-lady-for-30-years-and-still-going-strong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/rita-seatons-lollipop-lady-for-30-years-and-still-going-strong\/","title":{"rendered":"Rita, Seaton&#8217;s &#8216;lollipop lady&#8217; for 30 years and still going strong!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rita Hallett, our longest-serving School Crossing Patrol, has reached a major milestone by helping children and families cross the road more than million times over 30 years. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grandmother, Rita, 78, began working for us in 1992 and since then she has ensured countless families have been able to travel to and from Seaton Primary School in East Devon safely.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now Rita is encouraging others to consider joining our School Crossing Patrol with current vacancies in communities including Exmouth, Ivybridge, Tavistock, and Exeter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years Rita has seen many changes, from her uniform to the amount of traffic on the roads, which has increased significantly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But one thing has remained constant, the sight of Rita travelling to and from work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI cycle every day, and everyone knows me on my bike!\u201d said Rita.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: \u201cI started being a Patrol just before my grandson was born. It was half-term in November, and it was raining then.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the variable weather she says she has enjoyed every minute: \u201cI like seeing the children, they are great little characters, and the parents, it gets me motivated in the morning and they are all so lovely.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it something she recommends that other people try?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh, have a go it\u2019s good for you!\u201d she says. \u201cAnd very healthy, except when its pouring with rain of course!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to meet people. When you get older you tend to meet the same sorts of people. Doing this job means you get to meet and chat to the younger families.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the older children, the parents can leave them further up the road and they know they will safely get to school.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_78db1f878700a4dd7bf3af8e26eba1c8\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council\u2019s Cabinet Member for Highway Management said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cI want to thank Rita for her hard work and dedication over the last thirty years and hope she will do many more!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRita, and all our School Crossing Patrols, are doing a wonderful road safety role in keeping our children and families safe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure there are many people, many now with children of their own, who have fond memories of their schooldays and being kept safe by their \u2018lollipop lady\u2019 Rita.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need more people to step into this vital role across Devon.
