{"id":58562,"date":"2022-11-30T09:46:10","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T09:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=58562"},"modified":"2022-12-01T16:08:33","modified_gmt":"2022-12-01T16:08:33","slug":"devon-county-council-recognised-for-climate-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/devon-county-council-recognised-for-climate-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Devon County Council recognised for climate &#8216;leadership&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>We&#8217;ve been called a \u2018pioneering authority\u2019 by one of Britain\u2019s top sustainability charities for our partnership work to reduce emissions and waste in food and farming in Devon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainweb.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustain<\/a> advocates food and agricultural policies and practices that enhance the health and welfare of people and animals and improve the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Britain the food system contributes a third of all UK greenhouse gases, so Sustain looked at 200 UK local authorities to see how local authorities are tackling the climate and nature emergency through food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainweb.org\/news\/nov22-every-mouthful-counts-report\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Every Mouthful Helps report Sustain<\/a> found that the majority of councils omitted food and farming from their climate plans entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are just one 20 council areas that has in place \u2018measurable\u2019 policies to cut emissions from food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustain said that better performing councils like us have a range of policies and initiatives ranging from education and improving health outcomes to encouraging communities to reduce emissions and eat locally sourced produce and partnerships with producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The examples cited by Sustain include a range of partnerships where we have taken a lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include Devon Climate Emergency that includes 24 other public and private organisations, Recycle Devon, which includes all Devon\u2019s upper-tier local authorities, and the Devon Food Partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DCC\u2019s annual Farm Wise event is one example of how we have worked in partnership to help educate the next generation of farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year local farmers and producers interact with schoolchildren on subjects ranging from animal husbandry to the importance of taking care of the land through sustainable practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Community Action Groups Devon (CAG Devon) project, delivered by Recycle Devon, is an example of how whole communities have been helped to reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the project, groups have saved over 32 tonnes of food from waste \u2013 that\u2019s equivalent to 40 supermarket delivery vans, enough to feed a family of four for 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And on a strategic level we are also a lead partner in the Devon Food Partnership. This partnership includes producers and farmers, the voluntary sector, environmental groups, and academic institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its goal is to ensure that everyone in Devon has access to nutritious, affordable, local, sustainably produced food.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_1ae615830cdc60b681642c8d52a92286\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Andrea Davis, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cI am pleased that Sustain has recognised the work of DCC and our partners in developing an effective, local sustainable local food strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognise that this is not only key in tackling climate change and realising our ambitions in the Devon Carbon Plan to become a net-zero county by 2030, but to address the issues of food poverty, diet-related ill health, food waste and unsustainable farming practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cThe report gives many examples of initiatives from other councils that we can learn from. There is a great deal to do, and we will continue to work with our partners to ensure the best outcome for everyone in Devon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n\t<figure class=\"councillor-quote-image grid-x\">\r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"small-6 cell medium-12\" src=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/UserData\/4\/3\/1\/Info00000134\/bigpic.jpg\" alt=\"Councillor Andrea Davis\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\r\n        <figcaption class=\"councillor-quote-description small-6 cell medium-12\" >\r\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.devon.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=134\" rel=\"noopener\">Councillor Andrea Davis, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n            <\/figure>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p>Sustain said: &#8220;Some councils are doing commendably well, despite growing pressure on limited resources, and deserve recognition as leaders in their field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe report provides evidence of councils\u2019 ability to act, with pioneering authorities including Devon taking action\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany of the leading councils were found to be working with a Sustainable Food Partnership. Places with food partnerships scored on average 11% higher in this research, and were found to have more measurable and comprehensive plans to protect our planet\u2019s &#8211; and our own &#8211; future through
