{"id":58379,"date":"2022-11-18T10:54:04","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T10:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=58379"},"modified":"2023-01-12T14:45:40","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T14:45:40","slug":"trading-standards-returning-cash-to-victims-of-international-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/trading-standards-returning-cash-to-victims-of-international-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Trading Standards returning cash to victims of international scam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Our trading standards service will be returning thousands of pounds to residents from across the region who were defrauded in an international lottery scam.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have been allocated \u00a325,000 to return to 135 victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s thanks to The National Trading Standards Team, who worked with the United States Federal Trade Commission, and they identified US-based fraudsters who targeted UK households with scam mail offering alleged cash wins and claiming \u2018guaranteed\u2019 cash prizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kansas based criminals, Kevin Brandes, William Graham and Charles Floyd Anderson deliberately targeted older people living alone or those with long-term health conditions, sending deceptive personalised mail to individuals in the so-called \u2018Next Gen\u2019 sweepstakes scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They enticed victims into paying an upfront fee ranging from \u00a325 to \u00a340 &#8211; and many paid the fee several times before realising there was no prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now following action taken by the US Federal Trade Commission, a Federal Judge ordered that $25 million of forfeited cash and assets be made available to compensate victims around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amounts we wil return to local people will vary between \u00a325 and \u00a31,225. We are also also advising those affected on how to identify scams and stay safe in future.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_dfffe2f20a4339476e8bde48a6f33ee0\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Janet Quinn, Scams Lead Officer for Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cThanks to the work of National Trading Standards and the Federal Trade Commission, I am delighted to say that we will be returning money to dozens of people who were defrauded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScams and mass marketing mail fraud like this are becoming increasingly common with fraudsters trying to capitalise on the current cost of living crises and they don\u2019t give a second thought to the damage they cause and the victims they scam, many of which are elderly and vulnerable and are least able to afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n    \r\n    <\/div>\n\n<div id=\"block_a18b099585e595e20a190f9380bc0bf1\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Rufus Gilbert, Devon County Council\u2019s cabinet Member for Trading Standards said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cThis investigation and approach to obtaining the proceeds of crime sends a clear message that fraudsters, wherever they are based, can be caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would urge residents and local businesses to be vigilant, carefully consider the implications of responding to unsolicited mail, telephone calls, emails or in-person cold callers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12
