{"id":55961,"date":"2022-04-14T15:24:59","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T14:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=55961"},"modified":"2022-07-01T12:36:54","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T11:36:54","slug":"bideford-arts-centre-refurb-to-include-modern-library-and-learn-devon-starts-in-june","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/bideford-arts-centre-refurb-to-include-modern-library-and-learn-devon-starts-in-june\/","title":{"rendered":"Bideford arts centre refurb to include modern library and Learn Devon starts in June"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next year Bideford will get a new modern library after work to transform the old arts centre building into a community \u2018hub\u2019, which will also include existing adult education services Learn Devon, was given the green light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday April 13 Devon County Council\u2019s Cabinet approved a recommendation that the construction contract should be awarded to Pearce Construction (Barnstaple).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contract award, for the \u00a31.7m redevelopment and modernisation of the building, follows a competitive tendering process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently the county council-owned building, on The Quay, is used by Learn Devon, Devon County Council\u2019s adult education service. The building is underused and needs updating and modernising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bideford\u2019s library service, operated by Libraries Unlimited, is currently housed in the town hall which is owned by Torridge District Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This scheme will house both services, providing the town with a modern library. It presents an opportunity to make better use of the building and to update it in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the work will include the addition of a passenger lift to make the facility fully accessible to the whole of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_6258295644f43\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council\u2019s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Communities and Equality, said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cThis scheme will create an exciting and stimulating place where the advantages of a modern library and learning opportunities housed in one building will significantly benefit Bideford and its wider community. The library will be fully accessible, and we will create a library that meets the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century needs of the local community. The new library will be a bright and welcoming space taking up the entire 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0floor of the old arts centre building as well as offering a flexible space on the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0floor to be used for events &amp; activities, a study area or as a hireable room for community and business use.
