{"id":54866,"date":"2022-01-31T17:05:59","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T17:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/?p=54866"},"modified":"2022-02-01T11:37:14","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T11:37:14","slug":"54866-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/news\/54866-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Work to stabilise high bank following Torrington landslip begins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Motorists are being urged not to attempt to use A386 at Orford Mill, Torrington, after it was closed last Thursday when a landslip caused rocks and debris to fall onto the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The warning follows reports that over the weekend some motorists moved the road signs and drove through, putting themselves in danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The road remains closed in both directions and, following an inspection by geotechnical experts over the weekend, work to remove loose rock on the high bank began this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the high bank remains unstable and there is a real danger of rocks falling onto the road, putting any motorist or road user attempting to use the road at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the loose rock is removed the condition of the rock face will be reassessed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_61f815c57b339\" class=\"councillor-quote align-right dcc grid-x\">\r\n\t<blockquote class=\"councillor-quote-blockquote medium-auto small-12 cell\">\r\n                    <div class=\"councillor-quote-title\"><p>Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council\u2019s Cabinet Member for Highways Management said:<\/p><\/div>\r\n        \t\t<div class=\"councillor-quote-text\"><p>\u201cPlease do not try and use the road. There is a real risk of falling rocks, trees and vegetation and for the safety of road users the road will stay closed for now.<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>\u201cWe have added to the closure signs to prevent access.<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>\u201cClearing the loose rock is likely to take around 10 days but it is possible that more problems with the rock face will be uncovered, and it could take longer.<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>\u201cOnce cleared, we will inspect the bank again. This will give us a better understanding of the risk of a further landslip. Can I thank local residents and businesses for their patience while these works are carried out. We all want the road to reopen\u00a0 as soon as possible, but safety is paramount and we don\u2019t yet know how long it will take to stabilise the bank. Rest assured though the road will be reopened to traffic as soon as it is safe to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n        <div class=\"councillor-quote-aside medium-auto small-12
