British Summer Time ends on Sunday 31 October and as well as remembering to put the clocks back, we’re reminding road users to \u201cbe bright, be seen\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With people travelling to work and school in the dark and in poor weather conditions when visibility is reduced, we’re urging people to take extra care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Motorists are asked to look out for more vulnerable road users and to give cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders plenty of space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and horse riders are all encouraged to wear reflective and fluorescent clothing to ensure they can be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: <\/p><\/div>\r\n \t\t

\u201cAt this time of year, with the reduced daylight hours, we all need to take extra care on our roads. Ensuring you can be seen and looking out for others on the roads can help improve safety for everyone travelling on Devon\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n

“Pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users can help make themselves more visible by wearing bright, fluorescent and reflective clothing to be seen by passing vehicles. Motorists can also play their part by reducing their speed and giving extra space when overtaking others. It\u2019s an important reminder to help us all keep each other safe and share our road space responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n

Everyone is reminded of the following advice \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Pedestrians should use marked crossing points where possible, and although they may have right of way over traffic on a zebra or light controlled crossing they are still responsible for ensuring that they don\u2019t step out onto the crossing until vehicles have stopped for them;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Cyclists must use a white front light, a red back light and a red reflector at the back;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Horse riders are advised to select crossing points very carefully and are asked to show courtesy to drivers who have slowed down for them;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Motorists should overtake only when it is safe to do so, and drivers should pass slowly and allow plenty of room when overtaking;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 All road users should look out for each other and take care, particularly in wet or icy conditions or if there are leaves on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
