Webinar to be held about Devon Multiply programme

Posted on:

Organisations interested in delivering innovative numeracy skills training to adults across Devon are invited to a special webinar next week.

The online event is an opportunity to find out more about grant funding opportunities available to support the Devon Multiply programme.

Devon Multiply offers easy access to free numeracy courses and initiatives that can help people without a GCSE grade 4 or C equivalent in Maths to brush up on their maths skills and become more confident with numbers. This can help in managing bills, budgeting, or improving job prospects. The project is funded by the Department of Education and it’s part of the Government’s Skills for Life campaign.

The webinar will take place on Microsoft Teams on Tuesday 23 May, from 1pm-2pm. It is open to all organisations, that are eligible to apply for grant funding, including private businesses, public organisations, voluntary organisations, charities, community groups and local authorities.

Attendees can find out about:

  • What Devon Multiply is all about;
  • Past projects and how they have made a difference;
  • Grant funding opportunities to provide numeracy courses and projects.

They can also sign up to receive notification of when grants become available, and when courses become available to attend.

Last year the project supported 15 organisations to provide a wide range of projects from organisations such as: Learn Devon, City College Plymouth, Exeter College, Eat That Frog CIC, Focus Training SW Ltd, I Can Do That! CIC, Libraries Unlimited, Living Options Devon, PETROC College, Project Cosmic, Sound Art Radio, South Devon College, University of Plymouth, West Devon Business Information Point Ltd, and YTKO Ltd.

Councillor Rufus Gilbert, Cabinet Member for Economic Recovery and Skills, said:

“Working with Learn Devon and local organisations across Devon on the Multiply project has so far helped over 340 learners improve their numeracy skills. We’re incredibly proud of what learners achieved and the innovative way that our providers helped to create engaging numeracy projects.

“The project ranged from using maths for tackling the cost-of-living issues to helping employees build maths skills related to their roles. We’re hoping that those who may be interested in helping to deliver this innovative programme will join us on the webinar to find out more.”

Allison Cooper, Service Manager at Learn Devon, said: “Multiply has provided us with a brilliant opportunity to engage with people who lack confidence with maths and numeracy. Our programme has focused on helping people to use maths in everyday situations. We have offered a range of maths courses covering everything from crafts, cooking, time management and budget planning as well as individual top-up sessions on specific areas such as percentages, adding and subtraction and more.

“As a result, we have had over 100 enrolments onto our short, online courses and workshops. We have also delivered 65 face-to-face interventions at libraries and community centres through February and March. We are looking forward to the next stage of the programme as we continue to reach out to new people across Devon.”
